What a great start the Preps have made to Term 2!
We are growing up so fast! South Melbourne Primary is a great place to learn and have fun. At break time, we have begun playing downstairs with the rest of the school. We are having fun and learning how to make new friends.
During Maths, we have been busy learning our numbers and even learning to break groups of objects into two parts. The concept of part-part-whole is going to give our Preps a strong foundation to solve more complex maths involving addition and subtraction. Great job, little mathematicians!
We have begun Term 2 with a new English unit! In our unit called Habitat Heroes, students have been learning what a habitat is and how to identify specific types of habitats and their related characteristics. Last week, we went on an adventure outside and observed whether or not the school grounds made a good habitat for living things. The students enjoyed documenting their findings and reporting back to the class.
Our Year 2 students have settled in well to Term 2 and have demonstrated their enthusiasm for the new topics we are learning about. In Science, they are developing their knowledge of habitats in relation to butterflies. This week, our students used their observation skills to identify the different plants in our forecourt. They took their pencil and paper outside to draw life-like sketches of the plants. Upon their return to the classroom, our students coloured in their sketches to add detail. They thoroughly enjoyed spending time in nature and identifying plants.
This year, the Year 3 cohort have implemented a weekly Community Huddle. This is where we join together to celebrate our successes from the week and reflect on areas that we can improve in. Each week we set a goal to work towards based on student reflections. These goals are focused on our Big 10, school values and routines and procedures. Some examples are improving the use of our silent signal and 1,2,3 transitions. Our class mascots have been looking out for students who have shown the school value of community by working hard to meet the weekly goal. We have blown away by how responsive and diligent students have been to improve and the ownership they have shown in our huddles.
Year 4 have started our new class novel, ‘The Legend of Podkin One-Ear’ by Keiran Larwood. 'The Legend of Podkin One-Ear' is a fantasy novel, with an adventuring rabbit as the main character. Our Year 4 students can’t wait to continue the book and see what adventures Podkin goes on! This week, students have been practising using the Single Paragraph Outline (SPO) structure to write descriptive paragraphs about two of the characters from the book. Please enjoy reading some of these below.
The Year 5 students have returned to school organised and ready to take on Term 2. In English, we have started our new novel called 'Tom's Midnight Garden'. Many of our students have been reading aloud extracts from the novel for the class. It has been great to listen to them reading in a loud and clear voice. We were learning to answer questions about the novel using evidence from the text. The Year 5 teachers were really impressed with their answers using this new skill.
In English, we have started a unit on poetry. We are reading "Sister Heart," by Sally Morgan. This book fosters empathy and understanding for Aboriginal culture and history. We have engaged in our own personal, heartfelt Acknowledgment of Country, honoring the Indigenous heritage woven into Australia's tapestry, we have unpicked language and structure of poems and learnt how to have respectful conversation about the importance of identity and culture. Celebrating the rich history of their nation, the Year 6 children have immersed themselves in tales of resilience and diversity. We have had discussions about the significance of our birth names have made further connections to our cultures.
