Student Leadership
Service, Initiative, Collaboration
Last Thursday 28 May, our Student Leadership Team participated in a dedicated Student Voice into Action Day, focused on building the knowledge, skills and confidence required to lead meaningful change within our school community.
The day began with a series of leadership development, team-building and capacity-building activities designed to strengthen our leaders' understanding of what effective student leadership looks like. Students explored how positive change occurs within organisations, developed skills in collaboration and problem-solving, and reflected on how they can best represent the voices of their peers.
The focus then shifted to reviewing and assessing the needs of our student body, including the responses received through our newly implemented Voice Box initiative. We would like to sincerely thank all students who have taken the time to submit suggestions, concerns and ideas. The quality and thoughtfulness of submissions have been outstanding and have provided valuable insight into the areas students believe would improve their school experience.
We are pleased to report that there will be several tangible student-led improvements occurring between now and the end of the year. Some of the proposals currently being explored include:
Throughout the day, student leaders worked collaboratively to assess the practicality, feasibility and potential impact of each proposal. This process has allowed us to identify priorities and begin developing timelines and action plans for implementation. While significant progress has been made, further planning is still required before finalised action plans can be shared with the wider school community.
Importantly, the Voice Box is not a one-off initiative. Our student leaders are committed to ensuring that student voice remains an ongoing part of decision-making at Berwick College. We encourage students to continue submitting ideas, suggestions and feedback throughout the year, knowing that each submission will be reviewed and considered.
Our Student Leadership Team is also committed to providing feedback to students who have made submissions. We believe that closing the feedback loop is essential if student voice is to remain authentic and meaningful. If you have submitted an idea through the Voice Box and have not yet heard back from us, please be assured that a member of the leadership team will be in contact with you in due course.
Finally, on a personal note, I would like to acknowledge and thank our student leaders for their enthusiasm, commitment and willingness to engage in this process. The quality of discussion, collaboration and critical thinking demonstrated throughout the Voice into Action Day was outstanding. I am genuinely excited to see the impact of this work over the coming months and the positive difference it will make for our school community.
On behalf of the student leadership team.
