Bike Education
What a huge term we have just completed in Physical Education. There are been many highlights, including our House Cross Country back in Week 4, but the Bike Education program has been a stand out. When the program started in Week 5 of this term, there were approximately 32 students across Level 4 who could not ride a 2 wheeled bike independently. At the time of publishing this newsletter we have only one student who has yet to master the balance required to ride on their own.
It is a great privilege to teach such an important life skill to students and one that will help them in becoming better road users later in life. The look on the students faces when they have been able to learn to ride is worth the effort.
Congratulations to all of the students involved in the program who have learnt a range of new skills including; hand signals for turning, standing on the pedals, emergency braking, using gears for different terrains, using brakes to control speed and stopping, riding over obstacles, straight line riding, scanning over their shoulder for upcoming traffic, controlled turns at slower speeds and important road rules. Our program will now have a break until after the House Athletics event in Week 4 (August 6th). It will be completed in Week 6 of Term 3 to enable as many students as possible to acquire the necessary skills to attend the journey to Ruffey Lake Park and back during their P.E lesson.
Thank you to all the parents who have supported the program and even purchased bikes in response, enabling students to practise their skills at home and enjoy the fun of riding around our many paths and trails in the area.
