Level Six

Interschool Sport

On Thursday 18 June, the Year 6 students enjoyed their first day of Winter Interschool Sports.

It was a fantastic day for soccer, with plenty of achievements to celebrate. For many students in Team B, it was their first experience playing competitive soccer, making the day especially memorable. Team A also performed exceptionally well, remaining undefeated with three wins and a draw. The boys were delighted with their efforts and are eager to carry this strong form into the second day.

Our Grade 6 mixed netball team competed in the Interschool Sports competition at Templestowe Leisure Centre. Playing on the outdoor courts, the team showed great determination and teamwork across seven games including two byes, finishing with one win. Most importantly, the students improved with each match, supported one another, and had lots of fun representing our school.

Our Tee-ball team had a great day with the mixed group winning all four of their matches and looking like a strong chance to go through to the finals later this week. The girls team had less success in term of wins but improved greatly throughout the day and showed excellent team work.

Our AFL team had a fantastic first day of Interschool Sports, showing determination, teamwork and a willingness to challenge themselves. For many students, it was their first time playing AFL, but they quickly adapted to the game and grew in confidence with every match. It was wonderful to see students enthusiastically trying different positions and supporting one another. Although the results didn't quite go our way, the team continued to work hard, learn from each game and improve their skills. They are excited and ready to be competitive on Day 2 and we wish them the very best of luck as they strive for their first win!

Our school was proud to host the Interschool Volleyball competition this term. Our students represented the school with pride, setting a positive example through their teamwork, sportsmanship and respect for other teams and officials. They encouraged one another throughout the day and demonstrated excellent communication and determination on the court. We are incredibly proud of the way our volleyball team represented our school.

English

This term, our first focus was on reading and writing narratives. We explored how authors create engaging characters through backstories, motivations, and personality traits. Students analysed narrative voice, including first- and third-person perspectives, and examined how tone, point of view, and perspective influence a reader’s understanding of a text. Through reading high-quality mentor texts, students identified effective writing techniques and applied these skills in their own narrative writing to develop a consistent and engaging author’s voice.

Students also focused on writing informative biographies. They researched well-known individuals and explored how biographies communicate important life experiences, achievements, and contributions. By analysing quality examples, students developed their understanding of biography structure and purpose, and used their research to create informative and engaging pieces of writing.

Maths

This finish the term in Mathematics, our students have been exploring probability and growing patterns, developing both their reasoning and problem-solving skills.

During our probability unit, students investigated the likelihood of events occurring using everyday situations, games, and experiments. They learned to describe outcomes using probability language and collected and analysed data to compare predicted and actual results.

In our growing patterns unit, students identified, continued and created patterns. They explored how patterns grow and learned to describe the rule behind each pattern. As their understanding developed, students began representing growing patterns using algebraic expressions, helping them make connections between patterns and mathematical relationships.

Theme

In Theme we have been studying Australian History, particularly during the 20th century. Topics included post war immigration, Indigenous land rights, the 1967 referendum, and the changing culture of Australia.

Students explored primary and secondary sources in order to research a migrant group which contributed to Australia in this time period. Important research skills included how to select appropriate resources, how to check for accuracy, and how to write a bibliography. Students chose how to present their learning with many choosing to create a poster, diorama, or booklet.

Grade 6 & Prep Buddy Activities

Inspired by Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert, our Grade 6 students guided their Prep buddies in creating imaginative leaf characters using natural materials, coloured paper and googly eyes.

This creative activity encouraged teamwork, storytelling and leadership while building wonderful connections between our older and younger students. We loved seeing their creativity come to life!

Our Prep and Grade 6 buddies had a wonderful time exploring The Jacket I Wear in the Snow. We learnt that Winter Solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year. It is a time to connect with nature around us and reflect on our inner world. As winter encourages rest and renewal, we can take a moment to slow down, recharge, and welcome the gradual return of the light. Together, they dressed their character in winter clothing, building friendships and teamwork while sharing a fun learning experience.
