Level Five

Level 5 has had an exciting and busy end to Term 2, highlighted by our incredible excursion to Sovereign Hill. Despite spending the entire day in the rain, students demonstrated outstanding resilience and positivity. It was wonderful to see students embracing every activity with a smile, showing great teamwork and not letting the weather impact their enjoyment of such a memorable learning experience. We are incredibly proud of the maturity and positive attitude shown by all Grade 5 students.
Writing
This term, students have worked hard on developing their public speaking skills by researching, writing and presenting their speeches to their classes. Two students from each class were selected to present their speeches in front of the entire Grade 5 cohort, before our finalists showcased their work again at Speech Night. Congratulations to Nay and Jasmine, who were selected as the Grade 5 Speech Night winners. We were incredibly impressed by the confidence, preparation and creativity shown by all students throughout the process.
Most recently, students have begun writing historical narratives linked to our Theme unit on Australia in the 1800s. We wanted to give students the opportunity to showcase everything they have learnt throughout the year and allow their creativity to guide their writing. It has been fantastic to see the unique ideas, detailed descriptions and engaging storylines that students have created.
Reading
In Reading, we have continued developing our comprehension strategies of monitoring and questioning. Students have been practising monitoring their understanding by identifying moments when a text does not make sense and using strategies to clarify their thinking. Through questioning, students have been encouraged to ask deeper questions before, during and after reading to strengthen their understanding and engagement with texts.
We have also started reading That Boy Jack as part of our Theme unit exploring Australia in the 1800s. The novel has supported students in developing their understanding of life during this period and provided inspiration for their historical narrative writing.
Maths
In Maths, students have been exploring the concepts of probability, perimeter and area. Through probability activities, students have been making predictions, describing the likelihood of events and using mathematical language to justify their thinking.
During our perimeter and area unit, students used trundle wheels to measure distances and create different shapes around the school grounds. They have thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on nature of this learning and will soon begin an exciting project where they design their own theme park, applying their knowledge of perimeter and area to create their own unique attractions and layouts.
