How We Express Ourselves

Year 3 Term 1B /2, 2025

Transdisciplinary Theme

'How we express ourselves'

Central Idea

People express themselves differently according to environment and audience

As an International Baccalaureate World School, authorised to teach the Primary Year’s Programme, we explore six transdisciplinary themes each year.

Our second unit of inquiry focuses on the theme of how we express ourselves and provides students with the opportunity to explore and improve their communication techniques. They will investigate various forms of communication and develop their skills through both individual and collaborative learning experiences.

A key focus of this unit is persuasive writing. Students will refine their ability to communicate ideas effectively across different environments and to a variety of audiences. They will analyse television commercials and engage in mini debates on selected topics, exploring the impact of different communication strategies on an audience.

To culminate the unit, students will collaborate in small action groups to create two different communication pieces on a topic they are passionate about. These will be tailored for at least two different audiences — for example, both students and teachers at BNPS. Their communication pieces may include posters, PowerPoint presentations, letters, diagrams, videos, or even dioramas.

We look forward to sharing the outcomes of their learning and celebrating their creativity and growth as communicators.

Action

Action in the PYP is initiated independently by the student as a result of the learning process. Action may be bringing a book or artefact related to the inquiry to school, or student-initiated drawings/posters/research. We celebrate our students’ ACTION every day in our classrooms.

If you see your children taking independent action at home encourage them to share their action with their class.
