A letter from Mr. Andrew Arney
Welcome back to our first newsletter for 2025!
As you will all know, last year we held our first House Swimming carnival in 23 years at Glenroy College. I couldn’t have been prouder of how it turned out, and this year’s event was just as good, if not better. Participation and behaviour were outstanding, and the reports we got back from the pool staff noted they we very impressed with the whole day - indicating that the Glenroy College student behaviour and engagement in the day far outstripped observations of recent carnivals from other local schools.
It is an immense undertaking, so thanks go to Sajida Tannoura and Jo Pampanella who (with great support from many groups withing the school) pulled the day together, the admin team for all the back end, and of course the outstanding team of staff who did not stop all day to ensure the event was a success.
Now on to the House Athletics Carnival and for Gold house to reclaim its rightful place!
We were thrilled to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who joined us for the 2025 Iftar Dinner. With over 300 attendees, this year’s event was a true celebration of unity, reflection, and togetherness.
We were honoured to welcome our esteemed VIP guests including Peter Khalil MP, Kathleen Matthews-Ward MP, CR Chris Miles, Lindsay Knight and Phil Tracy from Glenroy Lions, Trevor Moyle from Morland Rotary, Deb Crane Principal of Pascoe Vale North Primary, Rochelle Darby from INLLEN, Kathy Smith from RMIT, Horia Abou-Eid and the Team from Islamic Relief, Nuray Jarkan and Nic Oogjes from Merri-Bek Council, and of course members from the College Council.
The support and presence of all these community supports added to the significance of the evening. Their support and engagement in our community’s traditions help strengthen the bonds that connect us all.
A special thank you goes to our dedicated students and staff who worked tirelessly to organize this memorable evening, particularly Sajida Tannoura and Lidia Tizian who pulled the night together, and Year 12 student Ahmed Mohamed who led the call to break fast as well as the evening prayer. From planning the program to arranging the delicious meal and ensuring a warm and welcoming atmosphere, their hard work made this event possible. We also deeply appreciate those who helped set up, serve, and clean up afterward—their contributions did not go unnoticed.
As we continue to foster connection and understanding, we look forward to many more moments like this at Glenroy in the future.
2024 was a year where we saw lots and lots of changes, and as the year went on, we steadily increased our expectations of our students as learners and members of the Glenroy community.
We will unashamedly continue to have these High Expectations for Glenroy students this year. That will be in our expectations around behaviour, student readiness to learn, student work ethic, and of course we will have High Expectations for student academic growth.
We set High Expectations because we know our students can meet them, and that in meeting these High Expectations they can achieve and grow into the adults they want to be
We are of course going to continue making improvements to the school environment, continue to seek opportunities for students like camps and excursions, and we are going to continue having focus groups so we can hear from students and families about what you want to see in our school.
It promises to be a fabulous year and I can’t wait for you to see what our students can achieve!
