From the classroom

What we are learning this term at Rochy Primary School…
In Reading and Writing, all classes will begin the term by reading and writing persuasive texts. Students will be exploring persuasion (hopefully they don’t practice too often at home). Students will learn about the language devices authors use to persuade their audiences in reading and then have a go at using them in their own writing pieces. After completing the persuasive unit our focus will shift to something a little different. In the older years students will be exploring multimodal texts such as podcasts and script play writing where students will use technology to present their finished products. Our P-2 will look at different types of recounts such as recounting small moments in their lives and letter writing.
In Numeracy, the focus is varied as this term is used to revisit areas of the curriculum where students need extra practice. We have seen our upper years students’ exploring angles. We love hands on activities in maths where students get to apply their skills. Below are some photos from last weeks angle lessons in 3/4.
Our Wellbeing lessons will continue to focus on our Wellbeing strategy which includes a combination of Respectful Relationships, Berry Street Education model and will begin to include The Resilience Project. An outline of what is being covered this term is available on the Wellbeing page of the newsletter.
In Inquiry our P-2 students are looking at ‘People that help us’ where they will enjoy visits from local groups that help us in our community. Our 3-6 will again participate in inquiry days at the end of the term where they will be focusing on Civics and Citizenship. This will kick off with a visit from the federal member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell where he will discuss what it is like to be a politician and what his role is, and the students will have a chance to ask some questions. We will also have a visit from Cr Paul Jarman who is the Rochester Ward Councillor.
As well as this learning students will again enjoy our Friday Clubs for 4 weeks amongst other special events! It is sure to be a great term to see out 2024!
2025 Preps!
Last Thursday we welcomed our 2025 Prep students to school for their last term of Rochy Playtime. Children spend time forming connections with other students and teachers, ready for next year!
Last week, students explored colours and printing. Throughout the term, children will have the opportunity to do PE with Mrs Mangan, Art with Mrs McPhee, Wellbeing activities with Miss Ross and STEM activities with Miss Ietto along with classroom familiarisation with Mrs Pascoe.
Later on this term we will be welcoming our 2025 Preps to two extra transition sessions on 20th or 22nd November and 27th or 29th November as well as the state transition morning (9.00 - 12.00) on Tuesday 10th December. At the state transition, students will be placed into their 2025 grades and will know who their 2025 teacher is.
If you know of any children who are still to enrol please ask families to contact Janis in the office ASAP.
