Year Three

Unit of Inquiry: How We Express Ourselves

As part of our unit, How We Express Ourselves, students engaged in a range of purposeful and engaging learning experiences to expand their knowledge and deepen their understanding of the central idea 'Celebrations and commemorations reflect culture'.

To begin this inquiry, students participated in a provocation activity by bringing in artefacts, photos, souvenirs, and special items that represent their family traditions, beliefs, values, and cultural backgrounds. This activity sparked curiosity and encouraged students to reflect on and share their cultural identities, building a sense of pride and community within the classroom.

Throughout the unit, students identified both similarities and differences between their own family celebrations and global celebrations from around the world. This comparison allowed students to develop a sense of empathy, respect, and open-mindedness by understanding and appreciating perspectives different from their own.

Through this unit, students explored:

  • How people represent values, beliefs, and traditions (perspective)
  • Significant cultural events around the world (connection)
  • The origins of celebrations and commemorations (connection)

These discussions and hands-on experiences have helped students not only learn about cultural diversity but also embrace it, fostering respect for others and an appreciation for the many ways people express their cultures and unique identities.
