Leaders in the Making
Leaders in Making Year 5 2024
Our current Year 5 students gathered for a three-day program, ‘Leaders in the Making,’ while the Year 6 students were on camp. Each child started the program with an L-plate, learning to be a leader. The program concluded with a leadership pledge to the school and an award of a probationary licence in leadership.
The students listened to seven influential and inspiring speakers: Leon Wilson from Revolution Print, Dom Swinton, Kelly Sports Ballarat, Trent and Tim from the Ballarat Dojo, Donna Holloway, Koorie Engagement Support Officer, Department of Educations, Lucy Bennett 2023 BNPS School Captain and Sue Sawyer previous principal at BNPS.
Students explored leadership styles, what good leaders do, how people become leaders, who can be leaders, and why we need leaders.
They challenged themselves and tried many new things. They worked with many people they would not usually work with, exploring cooperation and teamwork. They made agreements about what they thought leaders do.
All students met with Mr Tait and learned about leadership positions in our school. We couldn’t be prouder of our Grade 5 students. Their attitudes, behaviour, and thoughts reflect positively on themselves, their families, their teachers, and our school.
Congratulations Year 5 students!
You will all be leaders in our school.
Some things our students had to say about the program.
Over the three days, the Year 5’s all learned and grew together as leaders. We got the chance to prepare for next year and listen to other leaders in our community. Everyone who visited had inspiring advice that stuck with us. I feel more ready now to be a leader after the program. - Ebony
In our Year 5 leadership program, we learned many things about leadership, like making good choices, respecting one another, and challenging ourselves. Nkulu.
My favourite part of the leadership program was when we found out about our buddies. - Mabel.
A key message from Sensei Trent was that the small things matter. – Jobe.
I enjoyed the pizza party because we all got to come together as a community. I also enjoyed the shark attack game because it was fun. – Riley M
In the Year 5 leadership program, I got the chance to work with everyone, make new friends, and reconnect with old ones. This program is so great to learn about working together, and it has brought the Year 6 leaders of 2025 closer together. I can’t wait to see where the new year takes us. – Shae
