The Presentation Sisters of Victoria celebrate 150 years!
On Sunday 15 September, the Presentation Sisters of Victoria commemorated their 150th anniversary with a beautiful celebration of the Eucharist, led by Fr Andrew Hamilton SJ, at St Mary’s Catholic Church, St Kilda East followed by afternoon tea.
Sr Helen Carboon PBVM, congregational leader, welcomed all gathered and shared the story of the first foundation of Presentation Sisters to travel from Limerick, Ireland to Victoria. In 1873, the Sisters received a letter from Father James Corbett, Parish Priest of St Mary’s Parish, seeking their help in ensuring the continuation of Catholic education after the 1872 Education Act saw the withdrawal of funds for religious schools.
‘Seven young Irish women came,’ Sr Helen said, ‘with faith and love and laughter brimming over, and hope in their firm hands like seed.’
‘The seed they planted has flourished and today we celebrate the promise that has become a blessing for all, shaped by the Presentation mission of “life to the full for all.”’
The Stacella Choir from Star of the Sea College, Brighton, opened by the Presentation Sisters in 1883, led the congregation beautifully in song. This was a most fitting reminder of what first brought the Presentation Sisters to Victoria, their commitment to the provision of Catholic education, and a celebration that their vision and ministry continues today!
