Foundies Visit the Queen Victoria Market

Cath Beswick

Last week the Foundation students and teachers visited the Queen Victoria Market as part of our Guided Play Inquiry into the Big Idea - “We can use a design process to help us promote healthy habits.”

Prior to the market visit, the students had designed a healthy food recipe in small groups, writing up the ingredients and the steps for the recipes. We travelled by tram to the market and then the students split off into their recipe groups to purchase ingredients from the fresh produce area. The students practised using money, thinking about how much things cost and the change they might receive back.

Once back at school on Wednesday, the students got to work making their recipes in the STELA kitchen. With the help of our amazing Grade 5/6 helpers, the students were able to chop, peel, blend, and bake their ingredients to make their recipes. They then shared them all together in a picnic on the oval.

After the picnic, the students reflected on their recipes, with the children giving their recipe a rating out of 5 with some hilarious results.

Thanks so much to all of our parents and carers who came and helped out on the day. We could not take the kids on such amazing adventures without your help. Thanks to Verity, Sam, Caroline, Marie, Mary, Suzie, Lou, Lizzie’s uncle, Luke, Sophie. Jo, Kristy-Lee and Imogen.
