Year 12 - Final Day!

On Monday 21 October, our teaching staff were up bright and early to cook breakfast for all of our Year 12 students. The bacon and egg rolls were then followed by the final assembly, which allowed students to reminisce and reflect on their years here at Norwood. A highlight of the assembly was the Year 12 video and performance of Green Day’s ‘Good Riddance’ (Time of Your Life).

The day concluded with our Valedictory Dinner at Karralyka where we presented our students with their Graduation Certificates. We are so proud of all that our students have achieved and their beaming faces said it all! The night also allowed the school to recognise some of our students for academic excellence and ongoing commitment to the school community.

Thank you to Mr Chris Sheehan (Head of Year 12), Mrs Leisa Beggs (Year 12 Coordinator) and Mrs Tina Danisch for their support of the Year 12 students and for their organisation of these recent events.

Year 12 Commemorative Tree

On their final day at Norwood Secondary College, our 2024 College Captains planted a commemorative tree on behalf of the Year 12 student cohort – a tradition that started back in 2017, and one that we hope to continue in the years to come.

We would like to thank Bunnings, Ringwood, for their donation of a Magnolia tree, shovel and bucket. We are very appreciative of their generosity and support of this tradition.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for the Footy Fundraiser! We kicked it off with a tasty sausage sizzle and plenty of popcorn for all to snack on. The real highlight was the Staff vs Students AFL game - the energy was electric! Both the staff and students brought their A game, and it was such a joy to watch. A huge shout-out to all the volunteers, players, supporters, and of course, anyone who came along. We had a fantastic total of $711.25 raised for the Concussion Legacy Foundation and their mission to create smarter and safer sports for athletes and everyone else affected by concussions and CTE! A big thank you to all volunteers, students, staff and participants for helping us out on the day, it wouldn't have been possible without you. Looking forward to the next one already!

Social Media Safety

Parents and carers play an important role in supporting their children to be safe online and on social media. You can help your children safely navigate their digital world and educate them to avoid harmful online experiences. You can explore websites, games, apps and social media together and set some rules and boundaries.

Your support and guidance can give your children the knowledge to make sound decisions online and confidence to ask for help when they need it. It is also important to stay informed about online safety.

The Department of Education recognises this important issue and has developed fact sheets about supports to help keep students safe online and what to do if they are involved in an online incident.

The fact sheets contain links to evidence-based information on supporting positive and safe online experiences, signs a child or young person might need support, what to do if something unsafe happens online, and where to reach out to for more support.

To access the fact sheets, refer to the Safe Socials webpage. The fact sheets are available in 19 community languages.

The government is also launching public consultation on age limits for social media.

You and your children can share your experiences to inform proposed changes via an online survey, before 5 pm on Friday 1 November 2024. For more information on the survey and to take part, refer to Proposed changes to social media age limits on the Engage Victoria website.

Before and After School Supervision

Student safety at NSC is our highest priority and the safe and appropriate supervision of students is an important element of our duty of care to students. Part of this duty is ensuring parents and students are aware of our student supervision arrangements before and after school.

Before and after school

NSC’s grounds are supervised by school staff from 8.23am until 3.13pm. Outside of these hours, school staff will not be available to supervise students.

Before school, staff supervise both the front and rear of the College and after school, supervise the front of the school, particularly students accessing the buses on Byron Street.

Students who wish to attend school outside of these hours will be able to access the Student Resource Centre which is open from 8.15am until 4.15pm. Twice a week, Homework Club is supervised from 3.15 until 4.30pm. Additionally, students attending outside of these hours for co-curricular activities, sport, examinations, early morning or after school classes will be supervised by the teachers involved.

Parents/carers are requested to ensure that students do not attend school outside of these supervised times unless they are attending a pre-arranged supervised activity (i.e. sport practice).

Families are encouraged to contact the General Office for more information about our student supervision arrangements.
