Learning Highlights

Kinder gym fun!
Our Year 10 Child studies class, recently enjoyed an excursion to the Eastside Activity Centre to assist with a Kinder Gym session. Kinder Gym is a movement based learning experience for young children (walker to 5 years) and their parents/caregivers. Children need as many opportunities as possible to optimise brain development and increase physical potential.
What an exciting opportunity for our students to apply their theory to practical activities!
2025 Leaders Commissioning Assembly
Recently we celebrated our 2025 leaders of MacKillop Catholic College in a very special Leaders Commissioning Assembly.
As these students begin their new leadership positions, we look forward to watching them flourish as they lead the College with compassion, excellence and service throughout 2025.
We congratulate all leaders on their appointment and wish them all the best in their new roles.
Year 9 visit to Corpus Christi Catholic School
This week, Year 9 Film and Animation students had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Corpus Christi Catholic School Kinder class to showcase their latest film project. Each student selected their favourite children’s picture book and brought it to life through filming, narrating, and editing, complete with sound effects and transitions to captivate their young audience.
The MacKillop students spent quality time with the Kinder students, presenting their films to small groups of five at a time. This experience proved to be both valuable and rewarding for everyone involved.
A heartfelt thank you to the Kinder staff for graciously welcoming us into their classroom.
History and Geography success!
Elliott Stee had the exciting opportunity to attend the Geography Big Week Out in Canberra due to his outstanding results in the Australian Geography Competition this year.
Geography’s Big Week Out is a mix of stimulating, hands-on geography activities which will challenge and extend the 16 high-achieving students invited to participate. The week also acts as the selection mechanism for choosing Australia's team (four students) who will compete at the International Geography Olympiad to be held in Bangkok, Thailand in 2025.
Elliott also recently received a High Distinction in the National History Competition, in addition to winning the History Medal for being a State Champion.
For entry into the National History Competition, students can submit pieces in diverse mediums and on an array of broad topics, under this year's theme of 'Crisis and Response'. The MacKillop submissions included essays, opinion pieces, a website, clay models, PowerPoint presentations and documentaries.
The successful students are as follows:
- Dexter Derrick (Year 7) focused on the Holocaust and the displacement of both Jewish and Palestinian refugees with the creation of the state of Israel as a new home for the Jewish people, displacing Palestinians in an event known as Nakba.
- Harriet Verdouw (Year 7) focused on the 'Rise and Fall of Covid-19' and its impacts globally.
- Samuel Braid (Year 8) focused on the Franklin River Dam and associated protests, filming on location and creating a multimedia piece about the lasting legacy of this event.
- Stella England (Year 10) constructed a truly remarkable piece titled 'The Pen and the Atom Bomb – An exploration into the effects of warfare on literature' (which quite literally blew my mind!!)
- Elliott Stee created an impressive and incredibly well-researched website from scratch about Australia's response to the Climate Crisis.
Dreams
The Dream’s cast have been busy rehearsing for Fusion. Dreams written by Barry Kay, explores a fantasy world where the Dream Agency can assist with planning a future just as you would use a travel agent to plan a holiday.
This is a comic play about the challenges of dreaming in a world that pressures young people to make ‘realistic’ choices. The students from Year 7 to 11 auditioned for their role in the play last term and are rehearsing every Tuesday and Thursday at lunchtime. Dreams will be performed at Fusion on Wednesday November 27.
Year 9 Servant Leadership
Recently the Year 9 Theology and Spirituality class took part in making sandwiches for Loui's Van as part of their new Servant Leadership unit. The students did an excellent job
and were happy to help knowing that their creations would be distributed to those in need that night.
A few students even volunteered to clean the van after the group had finished, showing excellent Servant Leadership skills.
