In the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, one of the key attributes we emphasise is that of a Thinker. This aspect of the IB Learner Profile is essential in helping our students navigate the complexities of today’s world. As parents, your role in fostering this trait is invaluable.
Being a Thinker involves critical and creative thinking skills. It means our students are encouraged to analyse and evaluate issues, make reasoned decisions, and approach problems with an open mind. Thinkers are not only expected to solve problems but also to explore various perspectives, which cultivates empathy and understanding.
As parents, there are ways to help develop children as thinkers:
1. Encourage Curiosity
2. Promote Problem-Solving
3. Model Reflective Thinking
4. Support Open-Mindedness
5. Value Creativity

In Year 1, students have been diving into an engaging unit titled "Where We Are in Place and Time." Recently, we focused on the line of inquiry, "How Childhood Changes Over Time." This exploration has allowed our young learners to connect with the past and gain a deeper understanding of their own experiences.
We were fortunate to celebrate Grandparents Day, which perfectly coincided with our inquiry. Our students had the wonderful opportunity to survey their grandparents about their childhood experiences. The insights gathered were not only informative but also filled with delightful surprises! From games played to the types of technology used, the differences and similarities over the years sparked lively discussions among the students.
This rich information will significantly enhance our learning as we compare and contrast childhood experiences across generations. We look forward to continuing this exploration, fostering a greater appreciation for the past while connecting it to our present lives.
Thank you to all the grandparents who participated and shared their stories!

As the Preps further explore their current unit they are applying the traits of the Thinker Learner Profile. Throughout their learning, they recognise that as ‘Thinkers’ they come up with ideas, solve problems, use language to explain what they think and consider ‘how’ to do things. As they explore the senses they have begun recognising that our senses send messages to the brain. Our brain then uses this information. It THINKS about the information. The children are developing their awareness of how we THINK to analyse information and to help us make choices through this unit.
