5/6 CRICKET GALA!
AIM: To promote participation and inclusivity in cricket
On Friday, November 1st, some of our enthusiastic Year 5/6 students attended a Cricket Gala Day! This special event was all about enjoying the game, giving cricket a go, and having fun—all without the pressure of scoring or competition. The focus was on inclusivity and learning, allowing students to deepen their understanding of the game’s rules in a supportive, team-oriented atmosphere.
Days like these are wonderful opportunities for students of all skill levels to come together, engage in a positive, social environment, and experience the joy of playing as part of a team. With modified versions of the game, each student can focus on teamwork, and developing new techniques, building their fitness and skills while feeling a sense of commitment to both their team and school community.
We’re so proud of our students who represented our school with enthusiasm and spirit. Events like these not only strengthen friendships and school pride but also connect students with their wider community. A big thank you to all who participated— Glenroy Central Primary School, Oak Park PS, St Francis PS, Pascoe Vale PS and Merri-bek PS (Oak Park St Francis Cricket Club, Glenroy Cricket Club & Cricket Victoria for their assistance in setting up the equipment and organisation in getting the day running).
A big shout out to Cameron Mitch from Glenroy Central Primary School for organising the day and inviting us!
EXPLORING NATURAL DISASTERS
THROUGH WRITING!
Our students have been diving into the fascinating world of natural disasters through writing their own explanation reports that describe how or why these powerful events occur. This allows students to explore topics like earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes, bringing science and writing together in an exciting way!
To start, students researched their chosen natural disaster, gathering as much information as possible to help explain the causes and effects. With clear learning intentions and success criteria guiding them, students used their notes to craft informative, engaging explanations, carefully checking that their writing made sense and flowed smoothly. Students used Chromebooks to publish their work, creating reports with organised paragraphs, headings, and eye-catching graphics to enhance their explanations. This publishing step brings their hard work to life, allowing them to showcase their research and creativity!
This writing task not only sparked curiosity about the incredible forces of nature but has also strengthened their writing skills a. We’re so proud of their efforts and can’t wait to see these fantastic reports come together!
STUDENT LEADERS!
AN UPDATE ON THE 2025 APPLICATION/SELECTION PROCESS!
This year, we introduced an engaging new process to select our 2025 school leaders, highlighting each student’s unique strengths and leadership qualities. This approach has promoted transparent communication with families and ensured that every candidate has a meaningful opportunity to share their vision for our school community.
The journey to select our School Captains began with students submitting an expression of interest, followed by speeches to their peers and teachers in the upper school cohorts. A vote by students and staff allowed the school community to have a voice in the selection. Shortlisted students then participated in one-on-one discussions with teachers and school leaders, allowing them to express their readiness to lead and their vision for positive contributions. Similarly, the House Captain selection process involved candidates giving speeches to their house groups, with students voting to select leaders who embody their house values. Shortlisted students will now meet with a teacher and school leadership to further discuss their aspirations.
This selection process highlights our commitment to fostering pride, responsibility, and community. It has provided valuable insights into each student’s growth and leadership potential. We are incredibly proud of all students who put themselves forward for these roles, showing courage and dedication to their peers. We look forward to announcing our 2025 School Leaders at assembly on December 6th (Week 9).
