Living Our Loreto Values Every Day

I have been engaging with both our Junior and Senior School students about the significance of Verity and practical ways to embody this value in our daily lives.

To bring this value to life, I shared the following story at a recent Senior School assembly. It perfectly encapsulates the spirit of who we strive to be here at Loreto College Marryatville.

Just recently, I had an interaction with a member of our community—a person who works with many schools and interacts with many students. In our conversation, they shared a message that filled me with pride. It wasn’t about our academic achievements or our co-curricular successes; instead, what they mentioned was something much more profound.

They told me that one of the main reasons they chose Loreto for their daughter was because of what they saw when they interacted with our students. Wherever they went, whether it was the grocery store, a local park, or even walking around the neighbourhood, they noticed something special about the girls from Loreto. They saw kindness, respect, good manners, and an undeniable sense of decency.

What stood out to them the most was that this wasn’t just the case when people were watching. They specifically pointed out that our students behaved in this way when no one was looking. Whether it was holding open a door, saying “please” or “thank you,” or simply treating others with respect, our students demonstrated these values consistently.

And that, I believe, speaks volumes about who we are as a community. It’s easy to act with kindness and respect when we know others are watching, but true character is shown in those quiet moments—when no one is looking. That’s when we have the opportunity to truly live our values.

As we start this new year, I want to encourage all of us to remember that every small action counts. It may seem insignificant at times, but these little acts of kindness and respect create a ripple effect that can change the world around us. Every day, you have the power to choose how you treat others—whether they are your friends, teachers, family members, or someone you don’t know.

Let us continue to build a community where everyone feels valued, seen, and respected. Let us live our values not just when it’s convenient, but especially when no one is looking. By doing so, we not only represent ourselves but also our whole Loreto community.

Let us walk forward in Verity, with honesty and integrity guiding our actions.
