Class 8 & 9 News

DAN GERICH

Welcome to the New School Year!

As we settle into another exciting year at Alice Springs Steiner School, the Year 8 and 9 students have kicked things off with a fascinating Main Lesson on the Internal Combustion Engine.

Throughout this lesson, students explored the fundamental concepts behind engines, gaining an understanding of the key components and how they work together to power vehicles. From pistons and crankshafts to fuel systems and ignition, we dived deep into the mechanics of internal combustion.

A highlight of our study was looking at alternative fuels. We experimented with canola oil as a fuel source and successfully ran an older diesel engine on it—sparking discussions about sustainability and the future of energy. Seeing an engine come to life on vegetable oil was a truly eye-opening experience for the class!

To round off our learning, we took a trip to the National Road Transport Hall of Fame, where students had the chance to see a range of engines and vehicles from different eras. This hands-on experience helped bring our studies to life and gave everyone a deeper appreciation for the evolution of transport technology.

We look forward to sharing more about our learning journey with you at our Class Meeting on 27 February. See you there!

Warmly,

Dan
