Join The Alice Steiner School Association – Make a Difference in Our Community!

Are you looking for a meaningful way to contribute to your child’s education while connecting with a passionate and supportive community? Becoming a member of The Alice Springs Steiner School Board is a powerful way to shape the future of our school while experiencing personal growth, leadership opportunities, and a deep sense of belonging.

The Alice Springs Steiner School is owned and governed by TASSA. The Governing Body, composed of dedicated volunteers, is responsible for ensuring good governance and overseeing the school’s strategic direction. It works closely with the Principal and the College of Teachers to maintain the high standards of education and school operations.

The school also benefits from the support of non-teaching staff who manage essential functions such as grounds, finance, and administration.

Our board is made up of parents and carers just like you—people who care deeply about the school and want to ensure it thrives for generations to come. Board membership offers:

Personal and professional growth – Develop leadership, decision-making, and teamwork skills in a supportive environment.

A stronger sense of community – Build meaningful connections with other engaged parents, teachers, and school leaders.

Clear and manageable commitments – We understand that life is busy! Our meetings and responsibilities are structured to be achievable for parents with varying availability.

If you've ever wanted to be more involved, now is the perfect time!

Board nomination forms will be available in every classroom at our Parent-Teacher Meetings on Thursday, 27th February. We invite you to take this opportunity to be part of something bigger helping to nurture and grow The Alice Springs Steiner School for the benefit of all our children.

Becoming a Member of TASSA

All parents and carers of children enrolled at the school automatically qualify for free membership in The Alice Springs Steiner Association (TASSA). Membership nomination forms are included in the Enrolment Pack or can be requested from the Office. Friends of the school may also apply for membership. Membership nominations are reviewed and approved by the Governing Body.

Governing Body Meetings

The Governing Body meets monthly during the school year, with Sub-Committees convening as needed. The TASSA Annual General Meeting is held towards the end of Term 1 each year, and at least 10% of TASSA members must attend the AGM in accordance with our Constitution.

Here are five common questions and answers parents and carers may have about signing up to become a Board member of your school:

1.What is the role of a School Board member?

A School Board member is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight to the school. This includes ensuring the school's vision, mission, and policies align with the needs of students, staff, and the community. Board members also help guide budget decisions, review school performance, and promote the overall well-being of the school environment.

2. What skills or experience do I need to become a Board member?

While specific qualifications may vary, the most important skills are a passion for education, strong communication abilities, and a willingness to collaborate with others. Experience in areas such as finance, education, leadership, or community engagement can be helpful but is not always required. Training and support will typically be provided to ensure all members can effectively contribute.

3. How much time does being a Board member take?

The time commitment varies, but generally, Board members are expected to attend regular meetings (monthly). There may also be additional responsibilities, such as special projects, depending on the needs of the school. The overall commitment usually averages a 8 hours per month.

4. What are the benefits of becoming a Board member?

Being a Board member allows you to directly influence the quality of education at your child's school. You will have a voice in shaping key decisions that impact the school community. It also provides an opportunity to build leadership skills, network with other community leaders, and contribute meaningfully to the local education system.

5. How do I apply to become a Board member?

The application process typically involves submitting a nomination or application form, possibly including a brief statement of interest or relevant experience. You may be asked to attend an information session or interview, and, in some cases, there may be an election process.
