Around the Grounds - Senior School

Duke of Ed
Over the summer break, eight Year 10 and 11 students were fortunate to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Tour at Wilsons Prom. Over four days and three nights, we hiked through breathtaking scenery, enjoyed stunning beaches and sunsets, and ate an extraordinary number of jellybeans.
With heavy packs on our backs, we fully embraced bush life—cooking with Trangias, navigating drop toilets, and pitching tents. Wilsons Prom itself was spectacular, with perfect weather allowing us to take in its picturesque views, pristine beaches and diverse natural flora.
A particular highlight was a mischievous wombat sneaking into our tent in the early hours of the morning and making off with a bag, much to our amusement.
For any students considering the Duke of Ed, the Wilsons Prom trip is one of the most rewarding experiences—a chance to reconnect with nature and have an unforgettable adventure.
A huge thank you to Mr Raz and Ms Sheehan for their support, preparation, and company on the hike!

Year 7 & Year 12 House Activities
House Swimming Training
House swimming training has kicked off this year with an amazing turnout from students. Over 80 students have been attending the sessions from 7am, training for the house carnival and enjoying a team-building breakfast afterward.
Endurance, race skills and relay practice have kept the swimmers busy. A huge thanks to the house and sport captains, PE and Sport staff, Heads of House and everyone who has been setting their alarm for an early start.
Based on the level of support going into the training, the carnival is set to be a fantastic event!

Coffee Cart
The HT Coffee Cart is a student-led initiative at Huntingtower that provides Year 9 students with specialist barista training, equipping them with practical hospitality skills. From Year 10 onwards, students apply these skills by operating the coffee cart, offering a professional coffee and hot drink service to staff and catering at special school events.
Through this program, students develop a range of valuable skills, including leadership, teamwork, technical expertise, customer service, business and time management, as well as staff and stock management.
The HT Coffee Cart fosters student confidence, responsibility, and employability while enhancing the overall school community experience.

Chess Club
Chess is off to a flying start in 2025!
In January, Jackie Li officially achieved the FIDE Master title based on his result in Singapore (Dec 2024), with a ranking of 2136. This is the highest ranking individual player we have ever had at Huntingtower and the only student to be ranked above 2000. Benny Chan also finished equal 2nd in the 2025 Australian Open Chess Championship (Minor Division) held in January 2025.
Our specialist coaching sessions, conducted by 2023/4 Victorian State Champion Chris Wallis, also start this week, with 29 students signing up—our biggest class ever!
Our lunchtime chess club has received a huge boost from the new Year 7 students, who enthusiastically filled our chess classroom and spilled out onto the deck with their chess sets. What a delight to see!
Chess at Huntingtower is looking great!

What's Cooking?
It has been wonderful to welcome students back into the kitchen this week.
Our Year 10 students have been investigating the functional properties of foods with their Great Biscuit Bake Off. Year 11s are exploring the origins of food, preparing Ancient Grain Salad and Bread. Year 9s poached chicken for a Coconut Chicken Bowl with fresh, fragrant slaw. Our Year 8s whipped up a delicious San Choy Bau in their first lesson back. Year 7 classes enjoyed their first HT Foods lesson, learning kitchen routines, measuring ingredients, and making their own batch of Fruit Muffins.
We hope every Food student will recreate these recipes for you at home over the next few weeks. Keep cooking!
