Kilvington Readers Festival - 'Charge Your Curiosity'
This year’s Kilvington Readers’ Festival, themed 'Charge Your Curiosity', has sparked a love for reading across Kilvington.
Years 7 to 12 students have enjoyed author talks, creative challenges and interactive activities that have sparked their imaginations.
YEAR 8 AUTHOR VISIT
Our Year 8s had the privilege of listening to Karen Comer, author of the verse novel Grace Notes. She shared her writing process, offering insights into how her visual diary inspires her storytelling. Students were captivated by her creative approach and left with a deeper appreciation for how art and words come together in her novels.
YEAR 9 PODCASTER VISIT
Year 9s were entertained by Declan Fay, a comic writer and award-winning podcaster. He introduced them to the three main types of podcasting: scripted, improvised and conversational. With his humorous and engaging presentation, students walked away inspired to explore their own storytelling through audio.
UPCOMING AUTHOR VISITS
Next Tuesday 11 March, Year 7s will hear from James Phelan, author of The Last Thirteen series. It promises to be an engaging, interactive session. Years 10 to 12 will meet author Nevo Zevin on Wednesday 2 April. The Festival just keeps on giving!
MYSTERY IN THE LIBRARY
One of the week’s highlights was the'Mystery in the Library'challenge. Students put their detective skills to the test, analysing suspect statements and police evidence to solve the disappearance of the Head Librarian. This thrilling activity encouraged critical thinking and teamwork as students pieced together the clues.
DROP EVERYTHING AND READ
Additionally, our mentor groups took part in a Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) session, dedicating time to immerse themselves in books and enjoy uninterrupted reading.
ONGOING COMPETITIONS
The excitement continues with ongoing competitions! Students are invited to compose a song or jingle about reading and design our EFTPOS prize cards using this year’s theme, Charge Your Curiosity. These creative challenges are fantastic opportunities for students to showcase their artistic and musical talents while celebrating the joy of reading.
WORLD BOOK DAY
This year’s festival also aligns with World Book Day on Thursday, 6 March, which promotes the theme ‘Read Your Way’. This initiative encourages students to explore different formats of reading, including graphic novels, audiobooks and eBooks, making literature more accessible to all.
The connection between Charge Your Curiosity and Read Your Way highlights how we can fuel our imagination through stories, as well as charge our devices to listen to audiobooks or read eBooks. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to discover new ways to enjoy stories and broaden their reading experiences. As we say in the Library, reading is reading!
BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
On Friday, Years 7 to 9s registered their interest in competing in Battle of the Books, which will take place later in Term 2 against St Leonard’s College. Students nominated books they'd like on this year’s reading list. We can’t wait to dive in next term and regain possession of the winner’s cup.
THANK YOU
We look forward to seeing the incredible entries and celebrating the Festival winners in the weeks to come. Thank you to all students and staff who have contributed to making this year’s Readers’ Festival an unforgettable experience!
