Physical Education

Foundation - Year 2

F–2 Athletics Day was a wonderful celebration of fun, fitness, and school spirit! Despite some challenging weather conditions, our students showed fantastic enthusiasm, resilience, and sportsmanship throughout the day. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces as students participated with confidence and excitement.

Throughout the term, students have been practising and refining their skills in preparation for Athletics Day. They have worked hard to improve their running, jumping, throwing, balance, and coordination across a range of disciplines. Their effort, determination, and growth were clearly on display throughout the day, and they should be extremely proud of what they achieved.

Students competed in a range of events including the 50m sprint, long jump, and a variety of novelty activities such as the egg and spoon race, sack race, target throw, and High Hoppers. Each event encouraged participation, teamwork, having a go and our students certainly rose to the occasion!

A special thank you to our Year 6 leaders, who were wonderful role models for our younger students on the day. Their encouragement, responsibility, and support helped create such a positive atmosphere.

We would also like to extend a huge thank you to our parent helpers who gave their time to assist on the day. Your support was greatly appreciated and helped the event run smoothly. A big thank you as well to all families who came along to cheer on and encourage their children. Your support made the day even more special for our students.

Year 3 & 4

In Physical Education, our Year 3 and 4 students have successfully completed their soccer unit, where they practiced essential skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and working together as a team. They showed great improvement in cooperation, communication, and good sportsmanship during small-sided games. We really refined our knowledge of what it means to be a good captain, and be responsible for a small team. We will continue to build upon this learning next year.

We have now moved on to some fun Christmas-themed games (a game of Candy Cane-Wrapping Paper-Snowball, or even Grinch Tag, or Elf Express, anyone?) Students continue to develop confidence, stay physically active, and build positive attitudes toward healthy movement, all whilst enjoying this fun, joyous time of year!

Year 5 & 6

In Physical Education this term, our Year 6 students have been reflecting on their sporting journey at St Thomas. Year 6 students voted on their top five sports they have enjoyed learning throughout their primary years, and together we have been counting them down each week. We began with Dodgeball, followed by Basketball, Soccer, Netball, and finally next week we will conclude with their highest-rated sport Volleyball. Our Year 5 students also took part in each of these sports, developing their skills, teamwork, and understanding of game play across a variety of disciplines.

This unit has given students the chance to revisit favourite activities, celebrate their growth, and apply the strategies and techniques they have developed over time. It has also been a fantastic opportunity for teamwork, leadership, and positive peer support, with students displaying great sportsmanship throughout each lesson.

To our Year 6 students, we wish you every success in your future sporting endeavours as you move into secondary school. We hope you continue to enjoy being active, stay connected to sport, and carry forward the confidence, resilience, and teamwork you have developed during your time at St Thomas.

Well done to all students on a fantastic year of learning in Physical Education!
