Year 5

Spotlight on Learning

Bethany Community

Dear Bethany Families,

This week, our biggest highlight was our two-day, one-night camp at Mill Valley Ranch. The Year 5 students had a truly wonderful time and embraced every moment of this exciting adventure. Students took part in a wide range of team-based activities including crate climb, archery, the Amazing Race, horse riding, canoeing or rafting, damper cooking and night walk. These activities encouraged students to step out of their comfort zones, try new things, and support one another along the way.

We were very proud to see students working closely with their teammates - communicating, problem-solving, and celebrating each person’s efforts. They showed resilience, confidently adapting to sleeping in a new environment, following a different routine, and managing their personal belongings. They also demonstrated courage when trying unfamiliar activities and flexibility when plans changed. Throughout camp, students consistently displayed our school expectations of Safety, Learning, and Respect, and represented our community with maturity and kindness.

Wishing everyone a restful weekend after a big adventure!

Next Week

Religious Education:

Next week, students will explore Jesus’ leadership as shown in the scripture Matthew 11:28–30. They will learn that Jesus leads with gentleness, humility, and a desire to give others rest, comfort, and guidance. Students will then reflect on how this message connects to the upcoming Leadership Mass, where the Year 6 students will hand over their leadership roles to them. This will help students understand how they can follow Jesus’ example as they prepare to take on leadership responsibilities in Year 6.

English:

Next week, students will be reading a picture book, Tea and Sugar Christmas by Jane Jolly, illustrated by Robert Ingpen. The story offers a rich opportunity to explore life in remote Australia and the traditions surrounding the Tea and Sugar train that visited outback communities. Throughout the week, students will discuss character perspectives, explore the illustrations, built vocabulary linked to Australian history, travel, and Christmas traditions and practice using descriptive language in their writing.

Mathematics :

Next week, students will learn to communicate and evaluate the findings of a statistical investigation.

Integrated Studies:

In Integrated studies next week the students will be learning what respect and empathy look like in online spaces. They will learn how to practise ways to communicate online that help build positive relationships.

Social & Emotional Learning:

Next week, students will be learning how to recognise different types of problems. They will explore which challenges they can solve on their own, which situations are better handled with support from a friend, and when it’s important to seek help from a trusted adult. Through the learning, students will build confidence, make thoughtful decisions, and develop responsible help-seeking skills.

Auslan:

Students continue to revise previously learned concepts and use the Auslan Sign Bank to support them in reviewing alternative sign versions.

Reminders

HATS - During term 4, school hats are mandatory.

As students’ bodies and minds continue to develop, it’s important they start the day well-nourished. We kindly ask families to ensure that students come to school having eaten a healthy breakfast. A nutritious start to the day helps students maintain focus, energy, and a positive attitude throughout the morning, particularly during the first two hours of learning when concentration is vital. Thank you for your support in helping our students be ready to learn and do their best each day.

Reminder for students to bring in forks or spoons with their lunch.
