Magnify Around the Classrooms

#magnifysandhurst

It has been a busy fortnight in the P-2 area with lots of wonderful learning happening.

Foundation

Grade Prep children are listening to identify initial and final sounds in words. They are continually building on their knowledge of tricky words and are learning the word ‘said’ this week. They are sharing the story book, “Cinderella” and will learn what the words ‘brilliant,’ ‘astonished,’ and ‘wailed’ mean. They are making predictions about the text. I wonder what their predictions will be?

Gr 1

Grade One children are studying the picture book, “Harry by The Sea.” As part of their lessons, they will be creating WANTED posters. In spelling, they are continuing their work on vowels and are practicing identifying the medial short sounds of /ǒ/ and /ě/ in words. They are orally segmenting words to isolate individual sounds. This will help them with their spelling.

Gr 2

Grade Two children are enjoying the story book, “Collecting Colour,” which fits nicely into our Reconciliation Week theme. Children are using the text to make predictions as well as connections to the text. They are broadening their vocabulary. Ask them if they can tell you the meaning of ‘pesky,’ ‘occasionally,’ and ‘scanning!’ Grade Two comprehension activities have been focusing on visualisation and creating detailed pictures in their minds.

Foundation

Grade Prep students have been learning about 2D shapes. They have explored the differences between these shapes such as circles have curved lines and triangles have straight lines.

Gr 1

Following the OCHRE program for maths, Grade One are comparing objects based on indirect comparisons of length. They are also ordering objects according to length.

Gr 2

Grade Twos are continuing with the topic of Addition and Subtraction in maths and have been learning how to partition numbers to make problems easier to solve. They are adding and subtracting numbers with no re-grouping.

Gr 3 and 4

Reading & Writing: The 3/4s have completed their work on the novel, “Yirra and her Deadly Dog, Demon” by Anita Heiss. The writing has focused on the format of a factual recount, with particular attention to paragraphs and ensuring they have a topic sentence, supporting details and concluding sentence. The students have revised sentence types (statements, commands, questions and exclamations). They have touched on types of adverbs and continued to build their vocabulary.

Maths: We have completed our unit on multiplication and division and the associated assessments. We will begin our new topic 'Fractions' this week.

Gr 5 and 6

In 5/6, we have started reading our new novel, 'Dirrarn', which is the follow-on story of 'Black Cockatoo'. This story follows the main character, Mia, who has moved away from her remote community in the Kimberly to a boarding school in Perth. It follows Mia through the challenges she faces living in a different place that is thousands of kilometres from her home and family. As we are reading this story in class, we are focusing on 'factual recounts' during writing time.

In spelling, our focus is on using prefixes and suffixes correctly at the beginning and ends of words. We are also continuing to practice our joint handwriting.

In Maths, we have finished our '3D Shapes' topic, and have now moved on to our new 'Decimals' topic. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be focusing on the place value of decimal numbers, and adding decimal numbers using different strategies. Last week the students created models of 3D shapes with sticks and play dough.
