World Environment Day- 5th of June
World Environment Day was first celebrated in 1973. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) designated June 5 as the day to raise awareness about environmental issues.
At Wales Street we celebrated the day across the school by learning about ways we can protect and help our environment and why we need to do so. In Grade 5 we learned about small ways that we can change our behaviours to help the planet. Students then wrote an action they would like to try at home. Here’s some of their great ideas:
The Grade 5’s also wrote poems that expressed what they love about the environment, which links with their poetry unit through their current unit of Inquiry How We Express Ourselves with the Central Idea: ‘Creating and responding to art develops understanding of ourselves and the world around us.’ We are so proud of our environmentally aware budding poets!
