Work Readiness Skills

Gisborne Secondary College's Careers Department, in collaboration with Head Start, and the Year 10 Year Level Leaders, is empowering students with crucial work readiness skills through a dedicated program running this term during their Connect careers lessons. The program focuses on demystifying employability skills, highlighting their significance to prospective employers. Key areas covered include:

  • Punctuality and Reliability: Emphasizing the importance of arriving at work on time, consistently.
  • Professional Conduct: Addressing the appropriate use of mobile phones during work hours.
  • Engagement and Enthusiasm: Encouraging students to take an active interest in their tasks, while acknowledging that this may not be their lifelong career.
  • Interview Skills: Providing practical tips on effective interview techniques and common pitfalls to avoid, as well as guidance on professional presentation.

Furthermore, the program facilitates access to essential resources for students entering the workforce, including guidance and links to obtain:

  • Unique Student Identifiers (USI)
  • Tax File Numbers (TFN)
  • Bank accounts

A valuable component of the program is a dedicated Question & Answer session featuring local employers who generously volunteer their time. In a casual setting, students have the unique opportunity to engage directly with business owners and managers, gaining invaluable insights from their experiences as both employers and employees.

Gisborne Secondary College and Head Start extending their sincere gratitude to the following local businesses for their support and participation in this vital program:

  • The Millet Road Maker
  • Soprano's Pizza Bar
  • IGA Gisborne
