School-wide Positive Behaviour Support

The next stage of work in the area of School Wide Positive Behaviours at Gisborne Secondary College is to look to implement Classroom Systems, which are based on the Universal Supports: Positive Classroom Management Strategies (PCMS).

On the Pupil free day (Tuesday 17th June 2025) all staff will be undertaking professional development on areas 1 to 5 of the Positive Classroom Management Strategies.

Respectful Relationships

The Year 9 RAID program recently focused on Respectful Relationships. The Year 9 students participated in various activities designed to foster positive and respectful connections with others.

We placed an emphasis on kindness and the power of positive words and actions, discussing how simple acts of kindness can create a ripple effect—like a chain reaction. To gain deeper insights into the issue of bullying at Year 9, students completed the Bully Stoppers Survey. This will help us better understand the scope of the problem. They were also provided with information about the school's bullying policy, along with steps to prevent and respond to bullying.

In addition, we explored what it means to be a respectful member of GSC by reflecting on our 13 School-Wide Positive Behaviours (SWPBS). The students participated in a group activity on Google Forms to share their thoughts. We continue to use the SWPBS language in our Year 9 classes over the coming weeks to reinforce the expected behaviours.

At the end of the day, Year 9 students were set a Kindness Challenge, encouraging them to submit "Kindness Shout Outs" for their peers. As always, we encourage praise for positive behaviour, remind students of expected behaviour, and, if needed, issue logical consequences for any negative behaviour.
