Year 1 - 2 News

Little Learners Love Literacy:

"Students in Years 1 and 2 have been actively exploring various sounds and spelling rules. We utilize chitter chatter chants and home readers to assist students in retaining these sounds. By engaging with the same home reader three times, students can focus on different aspects of reading: initially on decoding the words, then on improving their reading speed, and finally on incorporating expression into their voice."

Writing:

This month for writing we have been looking at the structure of information reports and how to construct a plan. We have also been focusing on writing complete sentences and using adjectives in our Little Learners Prompt and student of the week lessons.

Reading:

Across the Term the students have got to explore the exciting World Around Us. In reading we have delved into the Continents, Countries and Cultures of the World. Learning information about famous Landmarks, native animals, the geography of different places and seeing what it is like for a child to live in Japan, Kenya, Canda, and Argentina. As we continue, we will also explore Europe, Antarctica and finally settling back in Australia.

Maths:

This month students have continued to investigate the value of digits in numbers, using bundling sticks, Base-10 blocks, and ten-frames.

When learning how to add and subtract numbers, students have used counting materials and number lines to help them understand the concept.  These are the strategies they have learned - counting on to add, counting back to subtract, doubles and near doubles, make to 10 strategy and fact families.

It is pleasing to see students’ enthusiasm when they use their mini whiteboards to show their understanding.

OLA- History:

‘School – Old and New’

During this term, students have been learning about how our school has changed over time. They have been looking at what school was like in the past and how it is different (or the same) today.

Students used a “Then and Now” Venn diagram to help them see the changes. They compared our school library and playgrounds by looking at photos from the past. They also explored our school grounds to find signs of the past—like old buildings, photos, or objects that have been here for a long time.

A special part of this learning was meeting our special guest speakers who shared what it was like to go to school many years ago. Students asked great questions and listened carefully to learn more.

This learning has helped students understand how things change over time, and why those changes happen. It also helped them see what has stayed the same in our school.

We are very proud of their thinking and curiosity! We are looking forward to our end of term excursion to ‘Old Gippstown Heritage Park’ to learn more about schools in the past.
