Year 8 Surfing Excursion

"Trying surfing for the first time was such an exciting experience! I was surprised by how much fun it was to catch a wave, even though I fell off a lot. Each time I stood up, I felt a rush of excitement and wanted to keep going. I’m really grateful for the chance to try something new that I never thought I’d enjoy so much. Surfing showed me that sometimes stepping out of my comfort zone can lead to amazing experiences."

Year 9 Excursion to Geelong Bowls Club: Exploring Lifestyle Activities in PE

As part of the Year 9 Physical Education curriculum, students from Western Heights College embarked on an exciting excursion to the City of Geelong Bowls Club on the 11th and 18th of October. This hands-on experience was designed to introduce students to the role of lifestyle activities and the importance of lifelong fitness habits.

Bowls, often perceived as a sport for older generations, provided our students with a fresh perspective on how recreational activities can foster community, promote mental well-being,

and support physical health. With guidance from club members and PE staff, students had the chance to learn and practice fundamental skills of bowls; from balance and hand-eye coordination to precision and teamwork. They discovered that bowls, while seemingly simple, requires skill, concentration, and strategy, making it an excellent example of a low-impact activity that promotes physical fitness for people of all ages.

Throughout the two sessions, students were encouraged to consider how they could incorporate lifestyle activities like bowls into their routines to maintain health and wellbeing

throughout their lives. The excursion highlighted that fitness isn’t limited to high-intensity sports; it can also be about enjoyment, relaxation, and social connection. Many students shared their excitement about exploring other similar activities and felt inspired to find lifestyle sports that suit their interests.

A massive thankyou to the City of Geelong Bowls Club volunteers, who generously shared their time, knowledge, and enthusiasm with our students. Their support made this experience both memorable and educational, and we are very grateful for their dedication to fostering community involvement and lifelong fitness.
