Middle School
As the year begins to draw to close, here are some of the highlights that students in Middle School have experienced over the past few weeks:
Breakfast Time
Year 8 students showcased their culinary skills in Food Technology by preparing breakfast for their teachers. This hands-on activity allowed them to practice essential cooking techniques, time management, and teamwork while creating a thoughtful and delicious meal. The experience not only reinforced their knowledge of food preparation and presentation but also fostered a sense of appreciation and community within the school.
Survival Shelter Building
Year 8 students brought their learning from Gary Paulsen’s novel Hatchet to life during an excursion to Rosanna Parklands, where they built survival shelters. This hands-on activity deepened their understanding of the novel’s themes, such as resilience and problem-solving, by challenging them to apply similar survival skills in a real-world setting. Working collaboratively, students used natural materials to construct their shelters, reinforcing their connection to the story and enhancing their practical and creative thinking skills.
Party Ready Program
Year 9 students participating in the St John’s Ambulance Party Ready Program learned essential skills and knowledge to stay safe and help others in social settings. They explored strategies for party safety, including planning ahead, staying alert during the event, and managing the end of the party. Key topics included the dangers of drink spiking, binge drinking, and drug use, as well as the physical and mental health effects of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and e-cigarettes. Students practiced the DRSABCD First Aid action plan, learning to perform CPR, use a defibrillator, and place someone in the recovery position. They also discussed how to call Triple Zero and what to expect during an emergency. The program addressed mental health conditions, the impact of substances on these conditions, and how to provide psychological first aid during a crisis. Through practical guidance and myth-busting, students were equipped with resources, knowledge, and confidence to support themselves and others in potentially risky situations.
