Grade 1

Literacy

In Literacy, we have explored a number of new sounds including ‘_dge’ (bridge), ‘_ge’ (cage), ‘_tch’ (catch) and ‘_ch’ (lunch). Each day, students have completed a follow up activity based on the explicit teaching for the session, as well as consolidating their prior knowledge by participating in a range of activities such as word sorting, partner reading, handwriting and more. Students enjoy using ipads to read texts in the MultiLit library, as well as reading hard copies of the texts.

Storybook

Over the last 2 weeks, students have been introduced to a new mentor text “Dingo”. The story follows a dingo from the comfort of her pack into the darkening landscape in search of food for her family. Students have learnt the definition of the words: active, determined and protect to help utilise in their writing. They participated in an additional fact file writing activity which led the Grade 1’s into another small presentation in front of their peers, further polishing their speaking and listening skills.

Additionally, students have been refining their punctuation in writing. After discussing various picture prompts, the Grade 1’s explored what a sentence looks and sounds like with an exclamation mark, later incorporating adjectives and conjunctions into their own exciting sentences.

Maths

Over the past two weeks, our Year 1 students have been busy developing their mathematical skills in a variety of areas. They recently completed a summative assessment on data and statistics, demonstrating their understanding of collecting data and presenting it through bar graphs and pictographs. Students also explored skip counting by 5s and 10s using hands-on manipulatives and play-based activities, helping them build fluency with these patterns. Additionally, they began learning about the concept of sharing, exploring the idea of dividing objects into equal groups to ensure fairness.

Integrated

Students have been learning the purpose of different places and how features within these spaces can be rearranged.  To consolidate this knowledge, students designed their own classroom! In library sessions, students have been learning to discuss how language and images are used in literacy texts by Australian authors and illustrators.  In wellbeing, students have been explicitly learning how to present in front of each other.  Over the past two weeks, students have been taught the importance of talking in detail about a topic and making eye contact with the audience.
