Initia Lit – Reading
Over the past fortnight in Reading, students continued reviewing their reading and writing sentences using the digraph sounds. Students have begun to use their sound knowledge to read and write CVCC and CCVC words with both single and digraph sounds. They have reviewed their tricky words and have been incorporated into both reading and writing exercises. Students have learnt new tricky words ‘come’, ‘some’, ‘out’ and ‘down’.
Our Storybook sessions featured “Lucy Goosey” by Margaret Wild. Students enjoyed this Australian text and engaged with the text by identifying words.
In addition, we have continued learning and practising segmenting words into their different sounds. Tapping the sounds down their arms students are able to blend the sounds together and more easily pronounce the words. This technique has been really effective at getting all levels of students to blend more fluently.
Finally, in Writing we have continued with the newly introduced technique of Colourful Semantics, a method of ensuring that students can write complete sentences by linking elements with colours. For example the ‘who’ is alway written in orange or the ‘what’ is always written in green. We have used picture prompts to write about creating a word splash of ideas to begin with.
Maths -
Prep students learning to subtract up to 20 love using fun tools like counters, blocks, or beads to help them understand "taking away." By moving or taking away these objects, they can see the numbers get smaller right in front of them, which makes learning easier and more exciting! Then, they learn to use symbols, like the minus sign (-), to show subtraction. Finally, they practice writing numbers to solve problems, putting all their learning together. This playful approach helps them feel confident about subtraction and ready to learn even more about numbers!
Swimming -
Going swimming with school is so much fun for prep students! They get to splash around and learn how to be safe and confident in the water with friendly teachers and instructors. It’s a great chance to practise kicking, floating, and maybe even diving under the water like little fish! Plus, it’s so exciting to be with classmates, cheering each other on and having giggles in the pool. Swimming days are not just about learning—they’re also about making happy memories and having the best time ever!
