Learning In My Levels

FOUNDATION
The first term has flown by and Foundation children have started to settle in to school routines. They have immersed themselves in ‘Discovery’, our play-based learning program, exploring their own interests as well as developing appropriate social skills.
The children have begun their journey toward becoming confident readers, writers and spellers with the Little Learners Love Literacy® program. We have met many of Milo Monkey’s friends, and students enjoyed celebrating at a Pirate Party for Peter the penguin. In addition, it has been pleasing to see confidence develop as students engage in a range of hands-on activities in Mathematics. We have started our countdown to 100 Days of School ... there’s still a little way to go!
Other highlights of this term in Foundation include getting to know our Grade 6 buddies and the lovely German tradition of students receiving their Schultüten (decorated by their buddies). As part of our Integrated Studies unit on family and community, we had a Grandparent’s/Special Person’s Morning, and visits from a real-life police officer and firefighters (including a tour of their fire truck). What an amazing Term 1!

We have revised sounds from last year and explored the long vowel sounds including the long a (ai, ay), long e (ee, ea, _ _ y), long i (y, igh, ie) and long o (oa) sounds. Thank you to our parent helpers who have come into the classroom to support students’ reading.
Level 1 also had fun celebrating our learning on the Beach Camp Day. Students dressed up in beach attire and participated in activities related to the different sounds.
In Writing, we have learnt how to write a recount. Students have been writing about their weekend each week. We have been focusing on simple punctuation, letter spaces between words, correct formation of letters, transition words and more. In Writing we have been looking at Narratives. We have been looking at the structure of a narrative (beginning, middle and end) and analysing various fairytales.
Students have been developing their skills in Speaking and Listening during ‘Talk Time’. Students have presented to the class about different topics such as holidays, introducing me, book spotlight and free choice.

We then focused on the Inquiry topic ‘Sound’. Level 1 learnt about vibrations, quiet vs loud, the eardrum, First Nations music and more. Students also attended an incursion with Hands on Science and learnt more about sound through group experiments.
Finally, we have finished the term looking at our Family Histories and Backgrounds. We learnt about diversity and our different cultural and family backgrounds.
Harmony Day
On Harmony students dressed in traditional attire or came wearing orange. We had a busy day of creating a whole-school heart on the oval, completing activities with our buddies, Bollywood dance and smoking ceremony. Thank you to everyone who contributed food to our cultural ‘Muncheon’.

In writing, they have been learning how to write recounts and exploring the structure needed to organise their ideas clearly. We have extended our learning about long vowel sounds in words. Students are practising active listening and clear communication with others.
In Mathematics, students have been working with larger numbers, exploring place value, and representing numbers in different ways to deepen their understandings. They have also been learning about the properties of 2D shapes and identifying these in the world around them, as well as exploring fractions in real-life contexts to help them understand how parts make a whole.
In inquiry investigations, students learnt about healthy and safe lifestyles. We made fruit skewers and learnt about staying safe online. Students explored the topic of sound and its properties. They especially enjoyed participating in an incursion where they experimented and investigated sound in engaging ways. Students engaged in important learning about Indigenous perspectives, including the meaning of Sorry Day and the importance of remembering and showing respect for the Stolen Generations. We’ve had such a fantastic start to the year in Grade 3! Term 1 has been full of exciting new experiences, including Flora and Fauna, Athletics, and 3/4 Sport. It’s been wonderful to see the students embrace these opportunities with enthusiasm and confidence.
In Maths, we’ve been busy building strong number skills. We’ve focused on place value, addition, and subtraction, while also working on explaining our thinking. The students have loved using whiteboards to solve problems and share their ideas with each other.
Reading time has been full of rich discussions and growing skills. We’ve been exploring comprehension strategies such as predicting, making connections, and inferring. A highlight has been reading Jackie French’s Fire, Flood, and Drought, which sparked lots of thoughtful conversations and curiosity.

Inquiry has been a real highlight this term! We’ve been learning about Australia’s natural and man-made features, both past and present. Students explored how landscapes can influence natural events and enjoyed researching different places around Australia.
We are so proud of how the Grade 3 students have settled into the year, showing resilience, curiosity, and a willingness to have a go, especially during our NAPLAN Week. We can’t wait to see what Term 2 brings!
LEVEL 4
Grade 4 have had a wonderful start to the year! Students have shown steady progress across all areas of the Curriculum and have enjoyed connecting with their classmates and teachers to create learning environments centred on learning, wellbeing and shared values.
In Mathematics, students developed their understanding of key concepts including the place value of whole numbers and decimals, counting, shapes, and addition and subtraction. Students will continue to focus on building their confidence to explain their thinking in more depth and apply their skills and understanding to solve worded problems connected to real world situations.
In Reading, students explored a range of texts and focused on comprehension strategies such as monitoring, making predictions, and making connections. As your child develops fluency in their reading, it is important for them to have opportunities to read aloud, to ensure they have the opportunity to read aloud and practice their decoding and comprehension skills. Encouraging regular reading at home will support continued growth.
In Writing, students planned, drafted, edited and published persuasive writing pieces on a variety of topics. They focused on structuring their writing to demonstrate their understanding of the text type, including using the O.R.E.O structure to write their arguments. Students have continued to work on including appropriate punctuation and using effective spelling strategies to improve their writing.
In Integrated Studies, students engaged in the unit Our Changing Earth, where they learned about natural processes such as erosion, weathering, and the impact of natural events on the environment in Australia. They showed curiosity and enthusiasm when exploring how the Earth changes over time and how humans can respond to these changes. Students participated in an incursion from Hands on Science where they were able to participate in experiments to deepen their understanding of changes in Earth, with a focus on the types of rocks and their formation. Students prepared and delivered an oral presentation about their chosen site within Australia.
In Wellbeing, students have continued to engage in lessons from the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships curriculum and The Cybersafety Project, with a focus on being safe online and making positive choices.
Overall, students have worked well this term and should be proud of their efforts. With continued focus and engagement, they will keep building on these important skills across the Curriculum.
On behalf of the Level 4, we wish all families a safe and relaxing term break.
