HSC Presiding Officer – Expression of Interest

Role overview

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) employs presiding officers, as casual exam staff appointed under the Government Sector Employment Act 2013. Schools are responsible for nominating a presiding officer (PO). NESA assesses the nominee and, if approved, appoints them to manage HSC exams on its behalf. Presiding officers report directly to NESA, while also working closely with schools to oversee the organisation and supervision of the HSC exams.

 

The Presiding Officer is responsible for:

  • Upholding the integrity of the HSC examinations.
  • Ensuring all NESA examination procedures are followed.
  • Managing students and organising supervising exam staff.
  • Maintaining accurate records and compliance throughout the exam period.

     

Eligibility requirements

A person cannot be appointed as Presiding Officer if they:

  • Have a near relative (including children, siblings, grandchildren, nieces, nephews or cousins) sitting the HSC this year at any school.
  • Are or were recently employed by the school (paid or volunteer).
  • Have any involvement with the school that may create a conflict of interest (including casual, relief, part-time or permanent employment, sports coaching, board membership, P&C membership, or any significant relationship with a staff member).
  • Tutor students sitting the HSC this year at any school.

 

Please note:

  • Individuals employed only for exam supervision (e.g. HSC trial or HSC exam supervisor roles) may still be eligible to act as Presiding Officer.

 

Presiding Officers must:

  • Have a Working with Children Check for paid employment prior to commencing work. 
  • Use a private vehicle (car) with comprehensive insurance to transport exam papers. 
  • Be located in proximity to the school (ie. within a one-hour commute by car). 
  • Be available to work for the following periods:  preparation and training tasks prior to the HSC exams (up to 8 weeks prior) of the entire exam period (13 October 2026 to 5 November 2026), based on your school’s exam timetable of follow-up tasks for after the HSC exams (up to one week), as required 
  • Have an email address, a mobile phone and be able to use NESA’s online portal, as some HSC information is only available online. 
  • Have the physical ability to handle heavy exam materials and stand for long periods.
