Lent

Lent is a special time in the Christian calendar. It is the 40 days before Easter, not counting Sundays. During this time, Christians prepare their hearts for the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection at Easter.

Why is Lent important?

Lent helps us:

  • Slow down
  • Think about our choices
  • Grow closer to God
  • Care more for others

It is a time to reflect on how we live and how we can be more loving, patient, and kind.

How do people observe Lent?

Many Christians focus on three main practices:

  1. Prayer – Spending extra time talking and listening to God.
  2. Fasting – Giving something up (like sweets or screen time) to practice self-control.
  3. Almsgiving – Helping others by giving time, money, or kindness.

These practices are not about being perfect. They are about growing and trying our best.

Why 40 days?

The 40 days remind us of the time Jesus spent in the desert, where He prayed and prepared for His mission. Lent is our time to prepare too.

What does Lent mean for families?

Lent can be a wonderful opportunity for families to:

  • Pray together
  • Choose a small sacrifice together
  • Support a charity
  • Talk about making good choices

It is a season of hope. Even though Lent begins in a quiet and serious way, it leads us to the joy of Easter.

At St Peter's students will be learning all about Lent and how they can build a stronger relationship with God. Tomorrow we will gather as a whole school and celebrate Shrove Tuesday by cooking pancakes. On Wednesday at 9:00am Fr Junray will join us here at school for an Ash Wednesday Liturgy. All are very welcome to attend.

Each week there will be special prayers and things to do with your child during Lent.
