Visual Arts

Preps

Our Prep students have been diving into the world of colour in Visual Arts. They began by learning how primary colours mix to create secondary colours, using this knowledge to create their own colour wheels. From there, they turned these wheels into unique artworks through painting, drawing, and collage.

Building on this, students used primary-coloured pastels or crayons to draw imaginative creations inspired by shapes, like robots or castles, adding lines and patterns for detail. Next, they’ll bring these drawings to life by painting them with secondary colours. These hands-on activities are helping our students understand colour theory while sparking their creativity.

Year 1/2

Our Grade 1/2 students have been exploring the elements of art, focusing on different types of lines. They studied Gustav Klimt’s Tree of Life and created their own “Tree of Lines,” designing balanced trees with connecting branches.

Next, they filled their trees with imaginative details, using coloured textas to bring their ideas to life whether it’s donuts, panda bears, or something from their favourite game.

Students are now exploring how found and recycled objects can be used to create art, inspired by artists like Louise Nevelson. They’re designing their own assemblage houses from collected items, which will become part of a collaborative town or community mural.

Year 3/4

Our Grade 3/4 students have been deepening their understanding of line and pattern in art. They started by learning about Zentangle art, where they created their own designs, filling the space around their subject with intricate lines and patterns, or adding colour to the negative space.

Building on this, students are now creating beach paintings inspired by the top ten most visited Victorian beaches. They’re applying their knowledge of lines and patterns to capture the beauty and atmosphere of these popular beach scenes.

Year 5/6

Our Grade 5/6 students have been exploring the differences between realistic and abstract art, focusing on animals as their subject. After comparing these styles, each student selected an animal to inspire their own drawing. They chose whether to create their artwork in a realistic or abstract style, using materials of their choice, such as pastels, coloured pencils, or collage.

Students have been exploring the art of José Di Gregorio, creating their own unique designs using painter’s tape to “draw” on their paper. After painting over the taped areas, they will remove the tape to reveal their design in the positive space. These activities are encouraging students to experiment with different styles and techniques, allowing them to express their creativity in new and exciting ways.
