Term 3- Weeks 4-6
Lots happening in and around our school this term with the focus on some really fun events and activities that are a part of the tradition here at school. This week is no different with Book Week upon us! We enjoyed yet again a magnificent array of costumes and clever creative designs during our parade. Our staff also getting on board with lots of organisation and team planning going on!
It was with a twinge of sadness that I communicated to 1/2C this week that our lovely Mrs Warburton has eagerly accepted a new promotion as Assistant Principal at Geelong East Primary School which is due to commence in a few weeks.
Alice only joined us earlier this year and quickly became a much loved teacher and colleague at MPS so although we are really proud of her achieving this new role, we are truly sad to see her go too. Arrangements are being made currently to replace Alice in 1/2C and I will communicate this as soon as possible. Good luck to Mrs Warburton!! We know you'll do well.
One project that schools in our local network are working hard on is supporting our students on the transition from Primary to High School. With many of us with our own children in this boat, we do understand how it can really be a highly anxiety ridden time for our senior students. We are providing students with as many opportunities to liaise with, join in and visit our local High Schools regardless of which school they will end up attending as this exposure is really important to building their confidence.
A bit of a tradition that is fast building at Moriac, is the teachers vs students games we have each term. Last term, it was netball and what a great opportunity for our team to have some unbridled fun with our students!!! They absolutely love it and the crowd builds watching it too. The bonus was no injuries on either side, although personally the teachers were very competitive...poor students really didn't stand a chance. Stay tuned for the next competitive event!!!
Schools are benefitting immensely from receiving up to date Naplan results in a much more timely manner than in previous years. This allows schools the ability to analyse the results, compare to our annual implementation plan and targets and then adjust or shift the focus all within the current year. This is exactly what has occurred at MPS, with a close look at our most recent results for our Year 3 and 5 students. This year, one of our main goals was to work on writing within our school in a very close and directional way after recent years showed that we needed to work on stretching our students further to achieve higher results. I am really pleased to report that we have achieved the following results that are really cause for celebration.
Year 3- 94% of students at our school are achieving at strong or exceeding bands. Our similar schools are achieving at 83% and Network is at 85%.
Year 5- 79% of students at our school are achieving at strong or exceeding bands. Our similar schools are achieving at 74% and network at 75%.
In numeracy- Year 3 we have reduced the ‘Needs additional support’ band considerably and this is a testament to the tutor work Mrs T has been implementing with our students who have required extra support. Utilising an existing staff member who is here full time has allowed the ability to combine the planning with teams and her knowledge of all students at our schools is an added bonus.
Year 5 Numeracy- has shown an overall improvement in the number of students sitting in exceeding and strong bands and the work our senior teams are doing with differentiating student learning.
All students and staff across our school should be very proud of our results this year.
Each assembly we try to celebrate all our Moriac star students and draw out names from a jar that gives students the opportunity to be celebrated even further by reading out exactly what they received their award for. We have decided to include the names of the students who are drawn out at each assembly to share this with all families! Please see our page dedicated to this further into the newsletter.
On Friday August 16th, our Year 5/6 students headed off to our SSA Carnival at AWA stadium for the day.
We would like to thank all the students who participated for their enthusiastic and well behaved but competitive effort. Our students at MPS are a competitive bunch and really do love their sport but always represent our school to a really high standard. We would also like to the thank the volunteers who supported this event and allowed it to go smoothly and provided expert coaching advice on the day!
