Year 1

Martial Arts Incursion

Our Prep and Year One students were so thankful to have Sensei Kathryn and Anita from Challenge Martial Arts in Oakleigh run sessions during Week 5. Not only did the children learn some foundational martial arts skills, but the session also highlighted the importance of whole body listening and showing respect for others.

Sensei Kathryn taught students the three focus skills: eye focus, mind focus and body focus! It was so great so witness the children’s enthusiasm across the sessions learning about resilience along the way. They even got to take home a certificate!

Indonesian Day

On Wednesday 14 August, Year Ones enjoyed an amazing cultural experience celebrating Indonesian Day! Our Year 1 cohort participated in a range of activities. To begin, the children engaged in a dance workshop by ‘Suara Indonesia’. For the rest of the morning, they enjoyed decorating orangutans for the classroom door decorating competition!

In the afternoon, the children rotated through a range of outdoor games such as tug of war, sack racing, badminton and soccer! To conclude the day, the whole school gathered in the stadium for a special assembly! Students even got to try some Indonesian treats!

We thank Bu Gladys for organising such a special day!

CARP Productions ‘Mirror Mirror!’ Incursion

On Friday 16 August, Year One students were transported to Fairytale Land during an incursion with CARP Productions. The performance was a unique take on traditional fairytale, including up-to-date music and references to popular culture, ‘Mirror Mirror!’ brought many much-loved characters to life, inspiring students to love literature!

During the performance, a number of students were lucky enough to join in the magic and act out parts of the story. Based on their performance the Year One teachers believe we have a few up-and-coming actors at EHPS! Hopefully they don’t forget us when they are FAMOUS.

Book Week in Year One - ‘Reading is MAGIC’

Reading truly is magic in Year One. We adore a good book and have been learning so much about different aspects of literature throughout this year. What a special memory for students to bring this altogether during our Book Week celebrations.

Students thoroughly enjoyed dressing up during our Book Week Dress Up Day. They also enjoyed reading a variety of the CBCA Shortlisted Books and completing a range of Book Week themed activities throughout the week. Here is what some of the students had to say about Book Week for 2024:

“I loved when Mrs Johnston chased Miss Misso”.

“I loved walking around in the parade”.

“Dressing up was fun”.

“Making my costume because it took a long time”.

“I loved when we saw all the costumes at the parade”.

“Hearing ‘Mr Moo’ at the library. Miss Rose read it”.

“I liked how we made craft in the classroom”.
