Co-curricular Arts News

Dr Andrew Butt, Program Leader - Co-curricular Arts

The musicians have been particularly busy over the last few weeks with the Guitar Summit, Wind and Percussion Concert, Cathedral Concert and Battle of the Bands. All of these events have given our ensembles a great opportunity to hone their skills for the upcoming Catholic Colleges Music Festival over the EKKA break. It has also been a great opportunity to be mentored by some outstanding artists and collaborate with like-minded musicians.

At the Guitar Summit we welcomed Dr Anthony Garcia, an Old Boy of MCA, who mentored our guitar students in a series of ensemble works, including a quartet arrangement of “Beyond the Breakers” featuring our senior guitar students. The evening concert concluded with a mesmerising solo performance of one of Dr Garcia’s original works. The Wind & Percussion Concert was also a great success with some very spirited music making. A highlight of the concert was a combined band performance with Mt St Michael’s College students and our Wind Orchestra 1 boys, performing “Mystic Forest” and “Slaidburn March”. Last Thursday evening the Choral and String ensembles returned to the Cathedral of St Stephen for what is always a special event in the MCA calendar. The evening did not disappoint, with many highlights throughout the program. Finally, on Sunday, the annual MCA Battle of the Bands was held in glorious weather on the McMahon Oval. More photos and highlights of this event to come in the next newsletter.
