Term 3 has reached the halfway mark with the AIC competition taking a mid-term break for the EKKA holiday. This week is a great chance for boys and staff to recharge and refocus for the return to training next week and a full assault at the last month of competition for team sports in 2024.
Last weekend saw Marist travel to St Peters Lutheran College in basketball and tennis, with our rugby league teams playing a combination of St Peters and Ambrose Treacy. Over the course of the day, it is fair to say that Marist dominated the basketball results, only losing the 8A match across the whole day in a very strong overall performance, while in tennis SPLC dominated, with a draw in 9B and winning 7B an improvement for Marist on last year. Our 1st V was dominant throughout in quite a scrappy game of basketball where we struggled to find our rhythm at the start. It was pleasing to see the team settle and run away with the contest 85-49 and our bench got good minutes in the last quarter. The 1st IV also challenged their more favoured opponent early and managed to get some wins on the board before the strength of the St Peters program managed to get a grip of the contest and hold on for a 6-2 win.

Well done to our Year 12 volleyball team who, along with a Year 11 team, took part in the Queensland Volleyball Schools Cup on the weekend, finishing runners-up in Division 1. Both teams played really well with the year 12 team performing well across the three days to finish in second place to Calamvale. Thank you to Mr Patrick Denkes for organising the week along with Mr Sam Noble.
Ms Kathryn Badini - Coordinator
Well, the Hockey Firsts broke their streak of being only 1-nil up at halftime this week … this time it was 1-all against Padua College, an even more precarious place to be. Eventually (and thankfully) we found our rhythm with Isaac Pratt being rewarded and Matt Alvarez scoring what was a hard-fought for goal bringing the final result to 3-1.
The 1sts are still undefeated in their season and looking to build on the momentum they’ve built thus far for the finals.
Every week our 2nds get better as well. On Friday afternoon, they faced Brisbane Grammar School with solid performances coming from Hugo Tully, Alex McNamara, and Kyran Bryant who scored spectacular goal. A special thanks also to Lachy McKellar who was our formidable goalkeeper.

Round 4 – ATC
Last week was the official bye round where Marist took on ATC, who are developing their Rugby League program. It was a great opportunity for our teams to focus on their development and structures, as the results did not contribute to the outcome of the season. The day started extremely well, with the 5As and 7As showing some real class and determination. The 5As demonstrated great structure and spread the ball to the flanks of the field to exploit the opposition and create multiple scoring opportunities. The 7As were completely dominant and never gave the opposition an inch.
The other teams continued to impress, with the 6As showing their talents and the Year 9s, 10s, and 2nd XIII continuing their undefeated march towards premierships. The highlight for both schools on the day was the Year 8 match. ATC was particularly strong and constantly attacked down our left-hand side. It took a lot of resilience and focus from our boys to come from behind to win 24-12.
It was a special day for our 2nd XIII, who ran out as our most senior team for the day (effectively our 1st for the day). They did not disappoint, with some excellent Rugby League. Special mention goes to Tyrell Wombly, who was man of the match with 17 hit-ups and 27 tackles.
Well done to all the players. I would like to acknowledge the parent body for their support, especially in getting the boys to the matches on time and taking boarders. I would also like to thank Brett Head for all the voluntary work he does each week, supporting Years 7, 8, 9, and 10.

A Beautiful Day, A Tough Battle: Marist vs. St Peters
With sunshine in the forecast, our Marist teams braced themselves for a showdown against St Peters, the gold standard in AIC tennis. Many of our teams were still undefeated, fighting tooth and nail for premierships. We knew this match would be our toughest yet, and it certainly didn't disappoint.
Our boys fought valiantly, but St Peters proved to be just a tad more determined on the day. While we weren’t outgunned, we just couldn’t quite close out the matches, allowing St Peters too many chances to claw their way back. In the end, Marist emerged with 3 wins, 1 draw, and 12 losses from 16 matches. Despite the results, I’m incredibly proud of our boys' effort and resilience. We'll regroup and come back stronger for our next match against St Pats.
A special shoutout to the Year 5 team, who, even without their top player, cruised to victory, showcasing their depth in both the A and B teams. Also, congratulations to the Year 9B team, who continue to lead the ladder, keeping their premiership dreams alive with just three rounds to go. Well played, boys!
Captain’s Report – Henry Lambley, Captain of Tennis
This week, we faced a formidable and undefeated St Peters team in what could have been a premiership decider. The first two doubles matches left us 0-2 down, with both pairs facing tough opposition and going down 2-6. Undeterred, we headed into the singles, fully aware we were up against the best opponents we’d faced all year.
In the number one spot, I gave it my all but unfortunately went down 6-0, 6-1. Hamish played an incredible match, leading 5-2 in the second set, but ultimately fell 6-3, 7-5. Despite these setbacks, the tie was still within reach. Lachie mounted a stunning comeback, winning a marathon match 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 to keep our hopes alive. Unfortunately, Fletcher lost a nail-biting match tiebreak 10-8, which meant the tie was out of our grasp.
Still, we fought on in the final two doubles. Fletcher and Lachie battled hard but couldn’t secure a win. Hamish and I managed to claw back a 7-6 victory against the top pairing, but the final score of 2-6 didn’t quite reflect how close the day had been. We may not have capitalized on our chances, but I’m proud of how we fought against more experienced and talented opponents.
MVP for this week goes to Lachlan Davidson.
Doubles Tournament
In true tennis tradition, Mother Nature decided to join the fray, and due to rain, the doubles tournament has been postponed. We’ll reschedule as soon as we find an alternative date and let everyone know ASAP. Stay tuned!
