Year Level Updates

Prep

On Monday August 19th Prep students enjoyed a visit from Australian author Deborah Frenkel. Deborah has written many beautiful books including ‘100 School Days’ which she read for us on Monday.

The preps enjoyed listening to Deborah as she told us about the writing process. She even had a writing sample from when she was a prep student to show us that an author's journey begins in prep! We learnt how to use our eyes and ears to create imaginative and informative stories and how words can be used to make rhythm.

Year 1

This week was very special for our Year Ones, marking their second Book Week at Galilee, and it certainly lived up to expectations. We were thrilled to host a variety of special guests, including Mary Poppins, Harry Potter, Where’s Wally, Spiderman, and more. The Grade One students had a fantastic time, fully immersing themselves in the celebratory atmosphere.

In our reading lessons this week, our comprehension focus is questioning, and the students made great strides in this area, showing impressive effort and enthusiasm. We posed ‘I wonder’ questions to stimulate discussion. Questioning is a crucial aspect of reading comprehension as it actively engages young learners with the text and fosters deeper understanding. In addition, we were also lucky to have our year four buddies pop in to help out with our reading groups. We are so fortunate to have them working with us this year.

Year 2

Our Year 2 students have been engaged in a hands-on science project, exploring the growing of plants. The classroom has been buzzing with excitement as the children learned about the essential factors that seeds need to thrive, including sunlight and water.

The students planted seeds in both bags and cups, placing them by the window to soak up some sunlight. Each morning the students have rushed in to see the progress of their seed and to check if it has grown.

This project fostered a sense of responsibility and patience as the students await for the growth of their seed. We’re proud of their dedication and enthusiasm as they watch their seedlings sprout and flourish!

Year 3

The Year threes had an amazing time during Book Week this week. They attended an interesting workshop by the author Deborah Finkel, participated in the book week parade and completed a Big Write on the topic of ‘My Magic Power.’ Books are so interesting and exciting!

Year 4

Year 5

Our Book Week visiting author Zeno Sworder made so many great connections ranking drawings, talking about the reluctance to try drawing pictures as you get older.

We loved the Chinese and comic book references in the talk. If you get a chance, read his book My Strange Shrinking Parents (we read it in class) which is a great narrative about the migrant perspective and the sacrifices our parents make to give us the opportunities to prosper.

Some of the highlights for today's Book Week dress up.

Year 6

On Tuesday the 20th of August the Year 6 students went to the Victorian State Library as a book week activity. We split off into our classes and started the tours. We first learnt about how to find if an online website is trustworthy or not. They used the acronym PARTY to teach us how to work out if a website is a reliable source of information.

We did a teacher vs the students game and of course the students won. Our tour guide brought us to different rooms of the library containing Ned Kelly’s armor, wonderful paintings, every newsletter published in Victoria and many, many books. Overall we had a very enjoyable time and I wish to go there again.

Throughout the week we completed a number of Book Week activities, we really enjoyed dressing up on Monday for the parade.
