Around Our Level

It’s been another very busy week in our level. Last Monday and Tuesday, Cast A and Cast B had their very first production rehearsals in the gym. The show is coming together nicely, as we approach dress rehearsals this week and our final performance at George Wood Performing Arts Centre at Yarra Valley Grammar School next week.

Last week we spent time with our buddies, undertaking a special Father’s Day activity. We hope that all our Dads and special persons had a lovely day. A big thank you to our Parents Association and volunteers for running our successful Father’s Day stall.

We were very fortunate to have had Olympian, Harry Garside, come and visit us for a special whole school assembly. He spoke about his achievements and future aspirations and answered questions posed from the students. What an honour to have Harry at our school and there were many excited students eager to meet their sporting hero and role model.

In Literacy, we have been learning about the short ‘a’ sound, as in apple, and the short ‘I’ sound, as in igloo. We have been undertaking reading conferences with our students and listening to them read one on one. We have been learning to write recounts about our weekend, with a focus on developing a number of ideas, using capital letters and leaving finger spaces between our words. We have played read and roll to develop our blending and segmenting skills in reading.

In Maths, we have been learning about sequencing time, reciting the days of the week and months of the year in order. We have looked at sequencing events that happen throughout the day, such as getting up early, eating breakfast, going to school, having lunch, play time, home time, dinner, brush teeth, go to bed.

This week in Numeracy we continue to develop our understanding about numbers to 20 and our focus changes to our new topic, ‘Collecting Data’, and representing this in the form of a picture graph. Our focus has been on counting and pointing to each item and trusting our count and making comparisons between groups.

In Wellbeing, we have been learning about caring for others and we brainstormed ideas in the class about how we can show others that we care. We have also revisited our classroom rules with our students to reinforce our school values of Respect, Kindness and being Safe.

Drawing Club has been a popular lunch time activity in Room 1 every second Tuesday at lunch time. It was wonderful to have 30 students enjoying colouring in and a drawing activity this week. Hope to see you all next time!
