Weathering the Storm at Yarra Road
Welcome to what feels like the most weather-focused newsletter of the year! Some days I wonder if I’m more of a weatherman than a principal, but Melbourne's wild and unpredictable weather keeps us all on our toes.
Recently, we’ve faced everything from intense rain to cyclone-like winds, reminding us just how important our extreme weather timetables are. When the weather turns too hot, wet, or windy, we have protocols in place to keep everyone safe. This means that during these conditions, students stay indoors or in sheltered areas during recess and lunch to avoid potential hazards like flying debris, falling branches, or excessive sun exposure.
As we approach the warmer months, it's also a perfect time to reinforce our commitment to being a SunSmart school. At Yarra Road, we take sun safety seriously. During months between September and April, all students are required to wear broad-brimmed hats when they are outside. No hat means no play; students without a hat will be asked to stay in shaded areas during outdoor activities. The Department of Education and Training (DET) policy does stipulate that we cannot administer sunscreen, however, there is nothing stopping students bring their own roll on sunscreens to further keep themselves from the Australian sun.
We encourage parents to ensure that their child has a hat at school every day, as this simple step goes a long way in protecting our students from the harmful effects of the sun.
While Melbourne's weather might be unpredictable, our commitment to the safety and well-being of our school community remains firm.
Have a great end to week and an even better weekend.
Father's Day Stall
The Father’s Day Stall on Thursday, 29th of September, was a day full of fun and excitement. Students eagerly shopped for their Dads and Special People, picking out gifts they were proud to take home. The event was a great success, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our wonderful volunteers who set up and ran the stall. The Parents Association is sincerely grateful for the fantastic support from our community, which made the day possible. We hope all the Dads and Special People enjoyed their thoughtful gifts!
To make the day even more special, the stall also offered students a great opportunity to practice important life skills, like decision-making, budgeting, and showing appreciation for others. Plus, the $1,546 raised from the day will go directly back to the school to fund improvements and resources, benefiting our students even more.
Sip and Shop on Tour
The Parents Association are holding a stall at the Wonga Park Cottage Sustainability Market on Sunday 15th September 10am - 1pm (9-13 Old Yarra Road, Wonga Park).
If you have any pre-loved fashion items please contact yarraroadpspa@gmail.com
During the last two weeks, the Junior School Council (JSC) student representatives organised craft activities during lunch time.
The JSC students offered encouragement and guidance, helping all students feel confident and engaged throughout the activities.
All students are welcome to attend every Thursday during Term 3 in Mrs Freene’s classroom.
This week students made daffodils for Daffodil Day and horse masks to promote the sound of the week, 'or'.
Dress Rehearsals a Success!
I am are thrilled to share that our dress rehearsals have gone exceptionally well! The students have truly shone in their costumes, and their hard work and dedication are evident. It’s been heartwarming to see everyone come together, bringing their characters to life with such enthusiasm and skill.
A huge congratulations to all our students—your performance is looking fantastic, and we couldn't be prouder. The energy and creativity you've put into this production is truly inspiring. We’re all eagerly looking forward to the big performances next week!
We can’t wait to see you all there!
