Jump Rope for Heart

We’re skipping through the term!

St Francis Xavier has raised over $9000 for the Heart Foundation!

Yet to register your child? It’s not too late: www.jumprope.org.au/parents

A reminder that students will be skipping throughout the term in PE lessons, as well as being provided opportunities to practise their skills at recess and lunch. This time can be added to your skipping log on your fundraising page.

Physical Education (PE) Lessons

During PE lessons, the students have been focusing on 4 main attributes to skipping, which can be transferred to many other sporting activities.

STAMINA is the strength and energy that allows us to sustain physical or mental effort for long periods of time. The students have been counting the number of skips they complete without stopping and try to better that number each week.

TIMING is the ability to choose the right moment to do or say something, or the time when something happens. This is important when skipping in a group using one rope or with other individuals at the same time. The students have also been learning about the importance of timing a jump in order to clear the rope each time.

RHYTHM is a strong repeated pattern of movement or sound. The students have been learning two rhythmic patterns of skipping, the double bounce and the single bounce. It is important for the students to develop a sense of rhythm when they skip to improve their stamina, as well as assist with jumping at the right time to clear the rope.

MOVEMENT involves changing place, position or posture. The students have been exposed to a number of different skipping skills, including forward and backward jumping, moving forward and backward while skipping and simple skipping tricks, such as

criss-cross and double jump.

By concentrating on these attributes and utilising independent practice, the students have been improving each and every week. I look forward to seeing how they continue to progress throughout the remainder of the term.

Thank you for supporting the Jump Rope for Heart program!
