DEBT

Ms Jacqeline Melia

DEBT is continuing to be a successful initiative at the College.

For those who are unsure of what DEBT is, DEBT is a team of students who meet weekly and work collaboratively to create an inclusive school culture at the college.

Term 1 saw the students of the team present to staff. This was a fantastic workshop entirely produced by the students. Students introduced themselves to the staff and described how disabilities may vary and in fact be invisible. They spoke about supports and accommodations, different styles of learning, general tips and advice for teachers, stimming, ideas for awareness and acceptance, and one of the highlights for teachers were the notes that they wrote outlining their own personal experiences.

The students were excited to expand on this idea and have since produced a poster that will go up in every classroom as a reminder of ways to keep our classrooms inclusive.

The DEBT group recognises the differing ways that students prefer to communicate and acknowledges that verbal communication is not always the preferred method. With this in mind, the students have also produced a pin that will be available to borrow from the school library. This pin comes in two editions, both read ‘Low Battery’: a red one = “Feeling low and would prefer to be left alone this session”, and an orange one = "Feeling low and would like someone to check in on me."

We are also excited to announce that we have begun to collaborate with SRC. This collaboration will see more voices being heard from the disability community, and we are excited to see what comes of it.
