Learning in Action

Literature

We are coming to the end of Thomas Appleby, Convict Boy. The learning undertaken in Knowledge Rich in term 2 provided rich background knowledge of life in the 1800s in England and the reasons why the First Fleet came to Australia. Supplementary reading this term delved deeper into what life for the convicts and marines was like, along with the impact on the Eora people and environment. 

During Text Level Writing, students have continued refining their note taking skills. These notes about topics such as 18th Century England, why the First Fleet came to Australia, early life in Sydney and the impact on the First Australians formed the basis for an information report all about the Settlement of Australia. 

➗ Maths

This fortnight, we began our Location unit. We learnt about Cartesian Planes and focussed on using the first quadrant. We practised using coordinates to locate and plot locations on the grid. We discovered that we always plot the x-axis first and then the y-axis and write coordinates like this; (3,5). Students had fun plotting individual letters on the grid, providing coordinates in a particular order and having their class mates solve their riddle to discover their mystery word.

Knowledge Rich

We took a trip back in time to Medieval Europe and the fall of the Roman Empire. This was a time where there was a rise of new kingdoms, the church became more powerful and Feudalism began. Feudalism was the time of Kings, Queens, nobility, knights and peasants. Castles were built to withstand attack as well as a demonstration of power and wealth. Just as society thought they had their people all under control, the Black Plague swept through, killing between one third to one half of Europe’s population. This led to worker shortages, a decline in trade and widespread emotional devastation. The line in the sand for this era was the great fire of London. The fire destroyed large parts of medieval history and lessons were learnt in regards to building codes and responses to fire fighting. 

Wellbeing

This fortnight began with a Buddies session, where the Grade 5s worked with the Preps to find similarities and differences between themselves.

This fortnight concluded with students looking at the human rights of individuals and the rights of Indigenous people. We learnt human rights are the rights of all human beings regardless of their gender, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, ability, age or any other status.  This means that everyone should be treated fairly and be free to make important and genuine choices in their lives. These human rights include the right to freedom of opinion and expression, freedom from slavery, torture and discrimination and the right to work and to education.
