📖 Literacy
The students have finished writing their persuasive letters on the topic Every Home Needs a Robot, and they are certainly convincing! They have used the PEPS structure (Point, Explanation, Proof and Statement) to develop strong arguments with supporting details. Keep an eye out for your child’s persuasive letter, which you can expect to receive by the end of the term!
We have also begun our poetry unit. The students explored the poem The Eagle and learnt how poets use figurative language, such as similes, to make their writing more descriptive and engaging. They also learnt about poetic structure, including stanzas, lines, rhythm and rhyme. The students explored how The Eagle follows an AAA BBB rhyming pattern across its two stanzas before having a go at creating their own poem about an animal of their choice using the same structure. We have been very impressed by the creativity and imagination in their poems!
The students also read Who Has Seen the Wind? and compared its structure with The Eagle. They discovered that this poem follows an ABCB rhyming pattern, where the second and fourth lines of each stanza rhyme. We also learnt about personification and how we can give non-human things human-like qualities. For example, “the tall grass danced gracefully” gives the grass a human action. The students then chose an object and used personification and the ABCB structure to create their own poems.
➗ Maths
It would be fantastic if students could continue to practise their times tables at home. We regularly practise these skills in the classroom, however, any additional practice at home will help students build fluency and consolidate this essential mathematical skill.
This fortnight, the students began their unit on decimals. They explored how to partition decimals into tenths and hundredths using both standard and non-standard expanded form. They then put this knowledge into practice through real-world applications involving money. The students learnt to write money in decimal format, convert between cents and dollars, and calculate change to the nearest 5 cents.
The students also applied their understanding of decimals to measurement. They practised writing measurements in metres as whole numbers, tenths and hundredths, and recorded lengths by partitioning them into metres, tenths and hundredths.
They then extended this understanding to other units of measurement, exploring the relationship between kilograms and grams, as well as litres and millilitres.
🌿 Wellbeing
This fortnight in Wellbeing has been an exciting one! We had our final Circles session for the term, where we recapped everything we had learnt about kindness. To finish off our sessions, the students chose someone to write a letter to, expressing their appreciation and thanking them for being kind. Many students wrote to their best friends, sharing how much they value their friendship, while others chose to write to a teacher or even one of the principals!
The Grade 4s have also been learning about teamwork. We explored what teamwork means and how working together can help us achieve success. The students then put their teamwork skills to the test through the Icy Pole Stick Challenge. It was fantastic to see the students communicating, sharing ideas and working together to achieve a common goal! Well done to our strongest, most creative and tallest category winners!
🏅 Sport in Grade 4 - Hooptime 🏀
On Monday 31st August, everyone had a fantastic day at Hooptime! We were so impressed by the “give it a go” attitude that all of the students displayed throughout the day, particularly when having to wait between matches. Everyone gave it a red-hot crack and showed fantastic sportsmanship, teamwork and determination.
A huge congratulations to our All Star Boys and All Star Girls teams, who both had an outstanding day and finished in 2nd place! What an achievement!
🌟 Kinder Visit
4FH had a wonderful visit with their Kinder buddies this week. The students worked together to create a special mural showing their Big Buddies and Little Buddies, which will be displayed at the Kinder. They also enjoyed a range of activities outside, including playing in the water and sandpit, building with blocks, playing on the playground and shooting some hoops in basketball. To finish the visit, the students enjoyed reading a picture storybook together under the big tree. It was a lovely afternoon filled with creativity, play and connection between our Big and Little Buddies!
