Big Day Out Excursion 

Students had a fantastic time on their Big Day Out Excursion to Sovereign Hill! They enjoyed exploring the different areas, taking part in a range of activities and experiencing what life was like during the Gold Rush. It was a fun-filled day of learning, exploring and spending time with friends. Here are some of the highlights from the day, in the students’ own words:

Madi - 'My favourite part of the Big Day Out Excursion was searching for gold. We got a pan and put it in the river, we scooped the pan and shuffled it to see if we could find little pieces of gold. I also enjoyed watching them make the lollies' 

Hudson - 'I enjoyed going on the gold mine tour because we saw a big gold nugget that someone found. I liked when we had to climb up a big ladder and go into different tunnels whilst we were underground.'

Annabelle B - 'When we went to Sovereign Hill, I really liked when we learnt about what people did to shape Australia. My favourite activity was going into the gold mines because we saw a big piece of gold that we could try and pick up'

📖 Literacy 

In Literacy, students have been busy finishing writing their own narratives. Students have been revising and editing their stories, adding powerful adjectives and extra details to make their writing more interesting and engaging for the reader. It has been wonderful to see their creativity shine through as they developed and polished their final pieces.

Following our exciting excursion to Sovereign Hill, students wrote a short reflection about their day. They shared their favourite experiences, described what they saw and did, and reflected on some of the new things they learnt during our visit.

Preview: Next week, students will publish their narratives by typing their final drafts on chromebooks.

 🧠Knowledge Rich

In Knowledge Rich, we have begun our new unit on World Rivers. Students have been learning about what rivers are, where they are found around the world and how they are formed. We have explored why rivers are an important source of water for farming and why many people have chosen to settle and build communities close to major rivers. Students have also started learning about the Murray River and how the river helps farmers, as well as the difference between the source and mouth of the river.

Preview: Students will continue building their knowledge about rivers by exploring river safety and navigation, the wildlife found along wild rivers, and how rapids and waterfalls can affect travel along rivers.

   ➗ Maths

Over the past fortnight, students have begun our new unit on Addition and Subtraction. They have been introduced to additive schemas by learning to identify whether a worded problem is a combine or compare problem. Students have been using the UPS Check (Understand, Plan, Solve, Check) strategy to help them understand and solve worded problems, as well as creating bar models to visually represent the information in each problem. They have also been developing their understanding of subtraction worded problems by identifying if a problem is a change or compare problem. Students have been solving a range of subtraction worded problems and explaining their thinking and strategies.

Preview: Next week, we will conclude the unit by learning about money, including the value of dollars and cents. Students will have the opportunity to apply their learning through a Rich Task, where they will practise and consolidate their new skills.

🌿Wellbeing

In Wellbeing, we have focused on reading body language to help us understand how others may be feeling. Students have learnt to identify facial expressions, body position and eye contact, and use these clues to understand how someone might be feeling. Students have also learnt about respecting others’ personal space and using words respectfully when communicating with others.

Looking ahead:

Students will revisit positive coping strategies, exploring different ways we can manage stress and calm ourselves when we are feeling overwhelmed. Students will also complete a lesson focused on kindness, exploring what kindness looks like, how we can show kindness to others, and how kindness and strength are connected.
