Knowledge Rich
Over the past fortnight, our students have been busy exploring the fascinating world of insects and bugs! We have investigated what makes an insect an insect, explored the life cycles of different insects, including the stages of complete and incomplete metamorphosis, and learnt about the differences between social and solitary insects. We have also taken a closer look at social insects such as ants and termites, insects that glow and sing, the fascinating armoured insects of the insect world, and discussed whether different insects can be considered a friend or foe!
We also learnt how scientists use observable features to group living things, how to identify insects and arachnids, and the important physical features that help animals find food and stay protected. It was wonderful to discover just how diverse and important insects are to our environment and to humans!
As part of our review, we got to play a fun game and act out being insects!
Most importantly, we had an exciting visit to the Melbourne Museum! Students were guided by a museum expert as they explored hands-on objects, investigated bug specimens up close and watched incredible slow-motion footage of bugs in action. Through small-group investigations, students were encouraged to ask questions, make observations and think like scientists!
➗ Maths
Last week, we started our unit on 'Operations.' We looked at ‘combine’ worded problems. Students were provided with a problem where they had to work out the unknown value e.g. unknown part, or unknown total. When the total was unknown, students would use addition to calculate it, and when a part was unknown students used subtraction. They were encouraged to draw upon strategies they already knew such as partitioning, number lines, counting on and vertical addition and subtraction. Students represented the problem on a bar model to show their understanding of ‘part-part-whole’.
This week, we looked at ‘equal group’ multiplicative word problems. Again, students were presented with a problem where they had to find the unknown value. To find the total, students would use multiplication and then division to find the number of groups or number per group. A range of strategies were drawn upon including skip counting, arrays, drawing, using materials, and repeated addition.
Preview - Students will continue consolidating their skills of solving worded problems using the four operations.
🌿 Wellbeing
Over the past two weeks in Wellbeing, we have been learning about kindness, respect and being gender fair.
Last week, we met with our CIRCLES groups. In Circles students explored the importance of showing kindness to others. They were encouraged to think about someone special in their lives and write them a letter to let them know how much they are appreciated. Students could choose anyone they wanted to share some kindness with, including a parent, grandparent, friend, teacher, coach or even a pet!
This week In our 4Rs lesson, we continued learning about ways to be ‘gender fair’. Students discussed how being gender fair means allowing everyone to choose what they like to play, wear or do, regardless of their gender. We practised respectful ways to respond when someone uses gender labels to tell us what we should or shouldn’t like or do, helping students feel confident to speak up respectfully and support others.
Students explored different ways Indi could respond to a comment about what girls can and can’t do. They practised:
- Using evidence or examples to challenge the idea - "Grandma digs in her garden and so can I."
- Sharing their own preferences and opinions - "Thanks, but I don’t need you to do it. I’m happy to keep digging."
- Questioning whether the statement is true - "That’s not true. Look at what I’ve dug. Girls have muscles too. We can dig."
