Literacy

In Literacy, we have been enjoying the text Wombat Stew. Students have been learning to retell a narrative using a narrative hill, identifying the beginning, characters, setting, middle, problem, feelings and ending/solution. We have also been expanding our understanding of adverbs and practising how to include them in our own writing.

We have enjoyed singing the Wombat Stew chant and identifying what each Australian animal brought to add to the billy can. Students also had fun creating their own unique pot of stew!

Knowledge Rich

This fortnight, students have been learning about informative texts through our focus on wombats. We have explored a range of facts about wombats, including their physical features, habitats, behaviours and how these features help them survive in the wild. Students have enjoyed building their knowledge and using new vocabulary like ‘burrows’ to talk about what they have learned.

We have also been exploring the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts. Students are learning that fiction texts are made-up stories, while non-fiction texts provide real facts and information. During our reading and discussion sessions, students have been identifying features of informative texts and thinking about how these texts help us learn more about the world around us.

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning about sharing and grouping. Through hands-on activities, students have been exploring how to share objects fairly and make equal groups, using counting strategies to work out how many are in each group. We have also been learning about remainders and discovering what happens when objects cannot be shared equally and there are some left over. Students have enjoyed using concrete materials and everyday examples to develop their understanding of sharing, grouping and remainders.
